I'm going to that resort (Kaprun) next week !!!

Further to my comments in the helmet thread, if I wasn't sure about
getting one before, I definitely am now.

    Quote
"Austria is set to reconsider plans to make helmets compulsory for all skiers after the horror smash."

I know you're only quoting the article but the statement in the article itself doesn't name a source/reference so we can assume it's just journalistic speculation.

I was trying to find a link for somewhere like BBC but they don't appear to be covering the story. They went with the 'German trapped on ski lift raises alert by setting fire to cash' story instead.

Would have thought yahoo would have gone with the ski lift story and bbc with the tradgedy above, but thats the media for you. I'll have a look around for some proper coverage...

Very sad. I'm off on Sat, never wore a helmet before but was seriously considering buying one this year - definitely shopping for one on Sat in the ski shop now.

    RIP. That is very sad.

We're heading to Kaprun on Saturday and this sad accident notwithstanding, I always wear a helmet when riding and depending on conditions, body armour too.
    Busy slopes are dangerous places......

Sad tragedy but an awful piece of journalism! What were her injuries and why would a helmet have helped? ...and what has the tragedy in Kaprun 10 years ago got to do with anything!

I wear a helmet but for most skiing accidents/falls a helmet will not make much if any difference!

...and they stated it was down to a severed Aorta...

Well then a helmet is bound to help...

A better idea in the ski resorts would be to either limit the amount of people on the pistes or somehow enforce the rules already in place that people ski to their abilities!

to quote the telegraph...."the Austrian Ski Federation warned that advances in ski technology meant novice holidaymakers were prone to travelling at speeds they cannot handle".

Unfortunately this is so true, for those looking at the winter olympics the local mountains of Vancouver - Seymour, Grouse & Cypress all have speed control officials on piste even Whistler has piste control (mainly on home runs)
normally a quick word does the trick otherwise lift pass priviledges are removed

I know this would open a can of worms in europe but is it time that some form of speed control be introduced? or at the very least designated low speed runs - especially on blue / green runs?
