Training Schedule For a Fat F%*&$@

    Hi,

    I didn't get my username for nothing but its now time to shift it. I have a bike and a little determination. What I don't have is any idea of what training schedule/programme I should embark on.
    I am 44, about 18 stone and totally unfit. Gave up smoking nearly 4 years ago and put on 3 extra stone.

    All help appreciated.

    Go back on the fags.

    I would just start off trying to use the bike more as part of your lifestyle. Commute a few days a week if possible, go to the shops on it, visit friends and all that. I think it takes a rare form of diligence to go from couch potato into a all out 5 day a week training machine.

    Venture to your nearest mountain or big hill and see how far up you can make it, make a note of the spot, enjoy the spin back down and see can you go further the next time.

    Or you could by a HRM, rollers, cycle computer and yawwwn threshold....tempo work zzzzzzzz.

    I would first set some cycling goals unrelated to the weight loss, perhaps some charity cycles or sportives.

    Whilst fitness and lightness are correlated, there will be times when you are getting better on the bike but not making much progress on the weight side. If you only have the weight as a goal, you'll start hating the cycling at those times, rather than appreciating your progress, and risk giving up.

    Diet is critical. It is much easier to eat 500 calories less than burn 500 calories more, but cycling makes you hungry and requires fuelling. Some recent discussion here.
