Hi all, new enough to this site and have taken up jogging recently. I started off by doing 2 miles, 3 times a week and stepped it up to a 3, 3, and 4 over the past month. I did a 6.5 mile run last weekend and for the last mile or so I was having these pains in my butt? well, actually just under my butt. the pains remind me of shin splints. with every step a pain shot up both side of my bum, so I had to walk the last bit of the run. I never had this happen before so I guess it maybe because I stepped up the distance too quickly? or is there something else going on? Anyone may have an idea whats going on? thanks for reading

Its not possible to diagnose from any post really and we are not supposed to do that here anyway, however the best advice is normally to see a physio if you are having pains which persist over time. In general you should make sure you are doing enough stretching and stretching all the right areas. Not doing this can cause different areas to get too tight and start giving trouble especially if you are increasing distance and not stretching enough. In particular in your bum, the piriformis muscle can get tight fairly easily without stretching. There is a very simple stretch you can do for helping with this, just google it.

But anyway as mentioned at the start if the pain is persisting and does not get better with stretching and rest you might want to see a physio of some sort.
