    Hey,
What's the story with children working behind the counter in some shops? (newsagents, food shops, etc). Is it legal? I imagine they're the sons and daughters of the owners. I walked into a shop yesterday to be served by what looked to be a 7 or 8 year old boy. Looked around and couldn't find anyone else in the shop

I would guess its against the law to employ children that young but i guess what happened was more than likely the kid was just watching the shop while her parent had to fly to the toilet for 2 mins or something.

It's legal for family businesses and one or two other industries (acting, for example)

If they are the kid of the owner I can't see anything wrong with it. Many a person on here would have grown up as part of the family business, doing their bit.
