what's the story with putting a 1.6TD engine into a 95 Passat that came from the factory with a 1.8 petrol engine?

I'm not asking about the nuts and bolts of the conversion, just the legalities re tax, insurance, NCT etc.

    Can anyone advise? :)

RF111 & Engineers report from SIMI garage. (Then trip to the tax office with forms & log book). I would photo copy the Garage report as the insurance company will more than likly be looking for this also.

It's declared to the insurance company as a modification too the car. As for NCT, should still count till the next retest(open to correction on that one).

In the process at the moment, of change of particulars.

I just bought a car that has had a engine change at some point in it's life. Once I am officially the registered owner, I am entitled to get the details of when/where this happened from Shannon or the tax office?

    thanks msg11. good info :)

as for the "why" of the conversion: I've just bought a 95 passat 1.8 petrol with a knackered engine. I happen to have a 1.6TD Passat engine at home that I know is healthy. Putting one in the other should make for a cheap, economical daily driver for carrying my dogs around in. (at the moment I'm driving around with the back seat of my Corolla saloon removed completely so the dogs don't stink it up completely!)

I want to have the vehicle particulars changed primarily to comply with the law , to make sure it passes the NCT without any issues and *just in case* there was an accident you know the insurance folk will look for any discrepancy no matter how inconsequential to wriggle out of paying out.
The secondary reason would be to avail of the slightly cheaper rate of motor tax for the 1.6 engine. Simples :)
