Cancelled Sky subscription but still able to get channels

My mother recently cancelled her sky subscription as its only herself and my father living at home now.

Anyway i told her she would still be able to recieve the BBCs ITVs C4s etc by tuning them in. I printed off the instructions from boards and when over to the house to help her do this. In the mean time my uncle had given her a list of frequences and codes for alot of the channels, including some of the Sky sports and rtes.

While going through the process of adding the channels i said i'd chance some of the sky sports and low and behold they came on. I also tried the Rtes and TV3 and they came through as well.

The channels are not avialble when you use the EPG, it says on screen that you have to subscribe or words to that affect, but they are there when you go to other channels. The sky box was never hooked up to a phone line, would this have anything to do with it? Or does it have anything to do with the card in the box?

I would confirm that she is actually cancelled and that there is no bill arriving next month. The card is still in the box right?

A couple of years back a customer of mine decided to move house and cancelled her account with sky, she had multi room, intending to resubscribe at the new address.
Long story short... the mirror card in the std box cancelled and she lost recording facility on the sky + box but the channels remained there.
She had the full sky world package for over a year before the card died.
    Weird......

The account has been cancelled, she recieved confirmation of this. There is also an second box in the house which is in a bedroom that is not used now. Maybe the main card is in this box and the one in the other room is, like you say kbell, a mirror card and has not been deactivated. Best to just make the most of it while its there i suppose. Thanks for the replys guys.

Just to ad my own experiences with a cancelled sub :-

I cancelled my HD sub in middle of 2009 and was told by the operator the card would remain active for a few days/weeks. I didn't care about getting a few extra days/weeks I immediately removed the box and stored it away. A few months later I decided I'd sell the HD box on adverts. Prior to selling I decided to test it to make sure it was working and to my surprise all the channels I had subscribed to where there. I got 2 months before the card finally stops working, at which point I sold the box.

I also know somebody who cancelled their sub 2 years ago and straight away lost all the UK based pay TV channels but kept RTE1, RTE2 and TV3 until the white card roll out late last year
