Citrus Limon repot

Hi all, I've wanted to buy a citrus limon tree for ages and finally took the plunge today. Of course it was an impulse buy and I didn't take the time to find info and pick the best plant. Anyway it seems to be pretty good, about 3-4 feet tall no yellow leaves and about 6 ripeneing lemons on it.

The soil in the container looks terrible and some of the roots are above the soil so I want to re-pot this guy and hopefully not kill him. Has anyone got any advice on repotting this plant and how to care for him? Should I remove the lemons before repotting? Should i leave it for a month or two before I re-pot?

    Thanks
