I went for lunch with my girlfriend yesterday to <snip>

We got the lunch meal deal and bought of us eat the chicken curry and it was indian and not too spicy at all.

Now my girlfriend said to me during the meal she could taste washing up liquid as she was eating it. Now I was a little tired and thought it was noting and never said anything paid and left bill came too 27 euro.

Since yesterday we have both had stomach pains cramps and toliet.

and I went into the resturant today asked too speak to the manager and told him what had happened he basically said hes willing to do noting and suggest I ring the Health Inspector.

I tried ringing the health inspector today but couldnt get throw to anyone.

Is there no way you could both have caught a bug, theres something terrible going around at the minute, its been in our house the last few weeks on and off, the 7 yr old is suffering now.

The hotel I married in was closed to the public of their own choice weeks before our wedding, there was a vomitting bug doing the rounds and as most of the locality would have a carvery there on a Sunday, being the only place in town, word was spread that it was food poisining down to them, it was very disappointing that their reputation was tarnished and they called health inspectors themselves and got clean results.

The problem here is that you need to prove that you ate something dodgy there. That's almost impossible unless you have a take-away sample of what you ate.

Saying you tasted dish washer fluid means nothing.

In the end, nothing may come of this.

Did you both eat anything else together in that day? Drink coffee somewhere, had a bar of something, etc. Anything could have caused you to be ill (never mind the fact there is a stomach bug going around also).

The manager point blank said noting not even a sorry or anything to what happend to us.

Ive never had to complain to a resturant before in my life whats the number for the health inspector ? do I have the right number.

So you both had nothing else at all, for the whole day? No water, milk, tea, coffee, lunch, breakfast? Had you both contact with other people??

Again, there is a stomach bug going around.

What can be done? You need to prove that it was the restaurant that caused you to be ill. For that, you need an actual sample of the food you both ate. Otherwise, all the health inspector will do is take note of your complaint, see if there are records of other complaints for that place, and maybe schedule a site inspection.

I'm not sure what you expected from the manager. He/she has no reason to believe that their establishment caused you to be ill, other than the fact you ate there.

do yeas have the number for the health inspector.

thats the only place we ate yesterday and we were in pain the rest of day.

To add what Paulw said, unless this was the only thing you had to eat or drink (including water) you had all day, it'd be hard to prove.

As other posters have said, it may have not been the food, it could be anything - touching a door, handrail on a bus/luas, money etc. so unless you can prove it is the food, you can't do much

You could ring the health inspectors as both of you have felt ill but you can't really prove it was from there and if you were together for a good part of the day, it could certainly be from something else

Did you eat ANYTHING else? Anywhere? At home, out, in a cafe, in a shop?

Anything in the previous 48hrs could have actually made you both ill, although it's usually something within 6 hours. And, it may not even be something you ate.

Do you have a sample of the food you ate?

If traces of washing up liquid could do that to you, then it would be taken off the shelves. It might seem surprising, but you could drink a bottle of fairy liquid, and it wouldnt do you any harm.

There is an awful tummy bug going round, they even just mentioned it on 2FM.

Is it normal for neither of you to have anything for breakfast? Just wondering. If it is not normal, maybe you already had the bug when you woke up.

What gets me most is that you say you have been to the toilet with this stomach ache which is definitely a sign of a bug rather than food poisining. Every single one of us here that get a bug such as this end up in the loo rather than being sick. The last time I was sick due to food I was ill within 30mns, and I mean very very ill and it passed within hours. I am sorry to doubt you but this seriously seems like a bug from what you say.

My advice would be to eat nothing until the pains go away and keep yourself hydrated.

You said it was an Indian curry? Coriander tastes like washing up liquid to some people!

As mentioned above, the winter vomiting bug is rife right now. Me, my wife, son, mother, brother, nephews, grandmother, and all the inlaws caught it over the last few weeks to varying degrees. And I wasn't going around the place licking doorknobs, it just happens really if you go out in public.

Just because you both ate in the same place doesn't mean you got sick there.

Sorry to tell you, but you have no way of proving it.

Twice in 10 years I have been investigated after complaints like this and it came to nothing. If the inspector comes out, they will take samples of everything and swab all the work surfaces for analysis.

It may be just a bug going around. I myself have been sick since sunday and so has my wife. VERY sick. Unless you have sample of what you ate for them, it cannot be proved, and at best they may just do a routine inspection on standards

No connection with the [restaurant name removed] except to say that I've been having lunch there about once a week for the last year and have had no problems.
Hate to see reputation of good value pleasant restaurant tarnished by unsubstantiated claims.

Totally agree with you there. It's a shame really.

While I don't doubt at all that the OP isn't feeling well, from everything so far, there is no indication that the restaurant is to blame, and in fact it sounds more and more like that stomach bug.

Tell them what exactly? It could easily be a stomach bug, or even tap water. The fact that they both ate in the same restaurant is largely meaningless. Baseless hysterics are not helpful at all, nor is bad mouthing an establishment without any proof what so ever.

All restaurants keep samples of their food for exactly such circumstances. If you feel it was food poison, then report it. The food samples can then be tested. More than likely, it was not the food.

Also, food poison can symptoms can take anything from hours to days to become apparent. It could have been something you both ate on Friday that made you sick today.

If you feel that you have a valid complaint, then ring the local Environmental Health Officer and they will investigate.

You can find info here, its up to the restaurant to prove their kitchens are up to code.

Washing up liquid won't do you any harm, especially not in a small enough dose that didn't render the meal completely inedible.

You should of course have mentioned it to the waiter as soon as you noticed that the meal did not taste right, or at the very least afterwards. There's little point going back the next day.

I'm not clear what your consumer issue is as such? You ate there, felt sick, there's a chance it was caused by something you ate at the restaurant. You have the number for the Health Inspector I'd say just try it again until you get through.

    And she kept eating it?

#1 rule of eating out : Never order Indian food in a non-Indian restaurant.

(#2 rule of eating out : Never eat in a place with pictures of the food on the menu.)

if lets just say I did get food poisoning there and I went and complianed would I get the same treatment from the manager.

cause I dont think that would be right at all he did not offer to say anything I was polite I said I am just letting you know he said o.k and said to me call the health inspector.

I have never coomplained to a resturant and it was my first time

I did not eat anything that day I had came into town to see my girlfriend I decided to take her too lunch and we have not been there in say the last 6 months.

the stomach pains started in the evening 2 hours after the meal and for the rest of the evening. I was grand the next day.

I rang the health inspector so they can take it from there.

Im a healthy person and I dont get sick at all if ever rarely.

Ring the local Environmental Health Officer who will be obliged to investigate if you have a case - people are correct in stating you could have picked this up anywhere but you could have picked this up from the food in the restaurant just as easily.

In situations like this I always think about other people who are eating there, could be sick from the food and don’t do anything about it.

Food poisining normally takes at least 6 hours to kick in (iirc)

Also of course the manager didnt apoligise, an apoligy is an omition of guilt
