Johnny Depp is set for a trip to 'Wonderland', courtesy of director pal Tim Burton.

The actor is to play the Mad Hatter in a new version of 'Alice in Wonderland', according to new reports.

The movie, which will hit cinema screens in 2010, will be directed by Burton. It will mark the seventh time he and Depp have worked together.

    Could, as ever, be interesting.

Is anyone else absolutely sick of the Depp/Burton combo ? I like them both but for gods sake, cast someone else. Its getting predictable, boring & stale.

Agreed! what are the odds he squeezes Helena Bonham Carter in it somewhere as well like usual...

Can't say I'm looking forward to this

While I like both Burton and Depp has either of them actually done anything original in the past 20 years? Depp has two roles, Jack Sparrow and Burtonesque while Burton just keeps repeating himself with every new film.

    Ah jaysus.
I am fed up of those two making the same movies over and over again.
I do not like living in the Burtonverse.
Should declare war on it really.

    Ha!
    Take that Burton!
How do you like your 14 houses and 17th century vampire bride now, knowing you aren't reaching me with your crap!

My sister bought me that book of his.
The melancholy death of Oyster boy or something.

    LOAD OF CRAP!

Better yet, start some nasty rumours about the Burtonverse on Whedonverse headed paper. Given both director's penchant for musicals it could be the campest war ever!

I bought that myself when I saw it in the poetry section of Hodges Figgis. I figured it must be good if it got published and a serious bookstore has it in a serious section. It's bad. Very bad. Almost as bad as Billy Corgan's book of poetry which I was somehow clever enough to avoid.

Whedon owns Burton ha managed in a few months to make a far more satisfying and entertaining musical than Burton could manage in nearly two decades.

Corgan's book is bad, really, really bad. I'm talkign bad on levels previously unheard of. Burton's book is a bit better but it still remains rather poor.

That's the sort of thing I'm talking about, you just need to disguise it as a Joss Whedon press release.

A bit better than something that was bad on levels previously unheard of sounds about right.
    Whedon is a joke IMO.

Please. Let's wait until he releases a terrible volume of poetry before judging.

Nah, each to their own and all that but personnaly I love Whedon. My favourite show of all time is Firefly, the film is one of my favourites and both Buffy and Angel were execellent. I highly recommend that you watch his muical Dr. Horrible.

    *sigh*

I wouldnt mind the burton/depp combo. But they kept the same bloody editor, which means the film will be identical pacing wise to all his other films *sigh*

The last truly great Depp performances were in Ed Wood and Dead Man and both were a very long time ago.

Personally I'm really looking forward to it. I love Tim Burton and his creepy cartoony style. I think it'll work well with Alice In Wonderland

Firefly is wonderful. Saw an episode of Buffy last night on TV and I don't think it has aged well. I used to like that show, but it just seems a little naff now. Firefly was great because whedon wasnt trying to make running gags about the trials and tribulations of growing up every 5 minutes. The one last night was the college one where the beer turns some philosophy snobs into cavemen, one or two funny bits, but it seemed a little juvenile and cliched (I guess thats what buffy always was!)

Depp as the mad hatter would be cool, and this is gonna be like a dark version of Alice in Wonderland...think Sweeney Todd mixed with Willy Wonka mixed with the Joker and thats what I'd like Depp to do

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

If they HAVE to do another movie what about a sequel to Sleepy Hollow, that would be nice.

Firefly ftw.... Buffy is a load of cock

Johnny Depp looks really good here. He's a really underrated actor because just look at him in this trailer and his straight laced performances in the likes of Blow and Public Enemies.

Looking forward to this film as it is meant to be much more faithful to the book.

    More true to the book?
First impression Alice is far too old.

I always get the impression that he's seen as eye candy more so than as a heavyweight actor. I also feel that some of his performances such as his one in Blow don't get the acclaim that they deserve.

An in the book Alice is a young adolescent roughly around 13 year, neither child nor woman.

That would not be my impression at all esp from those who have seen any of his acting in real films such as, the brave, the ninth gate, deadman, nick of time, blow, benn and joon

What about dank and disappointing? :D

That's what Burton will add to it.

Don't get me wrong.. I generally like Tim Burton and while I thought 'Sweeney Todd' was the best thing he's done in years, he's just far more miss than hit these days. And this looks like it may tread the same disappointing tired grounds as 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory'.

    But I remain hopeful..!

I don't know, I think people in general have a high opinion of him, and if people have anything bad to say about him, it's usually about his 'kooky' roles like Willy Wonka. I'd say I've rated him highly since Ed Wood. The Ninth Gate is another that shows what a solid actor he is.

I kinda agree with Basquille, Burton is very hit and miss, but when he hits it's terrific, so I'd give any of his films the benifit of doubt. For every Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he has a Big Fish.

Don't forget 21 Jump Street and Nightmare on Elm Street :pac::pac:.. but seriously he is an excellent actor - also in need of a mention is Ed Wood and Donnie Brasco.. oh and Edward Scissorhands..

I am not going to get my hopes up on AIW at all due to the sh*ite that was The Planet of the Apes and Willie Wonka.. and why the hell does he have to put Helena B.C. in all his films??.. enough is enough already - leave the little wife at home!! :D

I didn't bother with planet of the apes and tbh H.B.C. was great as Mrs Lovett.

I understand what you mean but I'd say that the reason he consistently casts the likes of Depp and Helena is because he wants familiarity. He probably sees casting actors and actresses that he hasn't worked with before as unnecessary distractions. Burton knows what he'll get from Depp and Carter. Depp and Carter know what Burton wants.

I really enjoyed Sweeny Todd and on the first watch I liked Helena as Mrs Lovett, but the second time I watched it I didn't think her voice was strong enough to carry the role and it just grinded on me.. I do like her as an actress but I think that he should find new talent to work with... except for Johnny.. we will keep him.. :D

Alice (Mia Wasikowska), now 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. She runs off, following the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before, yet doesn't remembe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

A lot of directors tend to stick with regular actors. Scorcese and DeNiro for example. I don't think Burton casting Depp and Carter all the time is a problem, it's just that he's made a number of bad films lately, and they'd be the same no matter who was cast in them.

    Where is that quote from?

If that is the premise of the film then it is not close to the book at all.
For in the book Alice is at the stage of being no longer a child and not yet counted a woman and has to preform a recital piece at a garden party and flees and has never been to wonderland before.

It seems they have mish mashed then the two books together which explains the presence of the red and white queens which are in "through the looking glass".

It looks like the least faithful adaptation of the book of all time. It looks pure Burton by numbers muck with Depp phoning in a zany performance.

Why the hell does it look like the Mad Hatter is a main character? At most he should be in it for 10 minutes if it was a proper adaptation.

You've also got the Red Queen, the Jaberwocky, Tweedledum and Tweedledee in there... none of whom are in the fecking book.

Have we all forgotten the balls Burton and Depp made of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of my favourite books. And while it is a very surreal and dreamlike I despise modern attempts to try and make it gothic and macabre.

It's just youtueb being retarded. Just search for the video on the site and you'll find it.

Have to say that I'm not what you would call impressed with what I've seen so far. It looks like another self indulgent **** fest for Depp and Burton. Don't get me wrong I think that both are insanely talented but neither has exactly stretched themselves in recent years. The last great film from either was Ed Wood and that was a long, long time ago.
