Hello there, just looking for a bit of advice.

I have to sow some hedges as part of my reps 4 plan. I am basically looking to sow the cheapest, easiest to grow etc but also something that will give a bit of a ditch in a few years.

what kind should i sow and what is the best time of year to sow them. They have to be done this year (2010) as part of the plan.

    all advice appreciated.

your planner should have specified what type of hedging you have to sow, usually whitethorn is the most popular and also the cheapest .. about €40 per 100

best time is from mid november to about the end of february

The planner does not need to specify the exact species, only give guidelines and ensure to use native species, me i would be going for willow, grows quick thickens well and suits most land types

sowed a hedge for reps 3 ,used whitethorn mostly @ 6 plants / meter in a staggered row ,plants cost around 330/1000 . i used a digger with a 12 inch bucket to dig a shallow trench and filled it back in again straight away, planted the plants at both edges of the trench using a spade

    thanks for the tip.
must look into willow, never thought of it but I would have thought once it got established it would grow vigoursly thus needing cutting every year, this is not what the dept are looking for in hedging, they prefer you cut hedges once every four to five years and rotate around the farm

any how will check it out have some hedging to do ourselves and it would be a new species, we have planned on putting in some holly and hazel as well.
