    Whats wrong with a Subaru.;)
Check your HT leads and spark plugs,
make sure your getting a good spark to each cylinder.
Sounds like its only running on 3 cylinders.

Is it just a different noise while running ok or is it also driving poorly?

If it sounds like a tractor and runs ok then it may be exhaust.

Have you ruled anything out/checked anything like oil levels? When was it last serviced?

Love the old Starlets, great little engines in them.
Meant to say, check all connections and pipes from the air box
too. Good luck and keep us informed.

    Check your oil level.
    Check all vacuum pipework
If oil hasn't been changed in a while, change it.
