I have a ftv card that I use periodically, seen somewhere that if card is not being used it can be switched off, I use it in an old sky box which I have and is not connected to a phone line so how can Sky tell whether it is being used or not. Also could I use it another Sky box or would this be inviting trouble for myself.

Your card needs to be in the sky box for it to receive updates. If it misses its update it will not open any channels until it receives this update. You can use it in any box once it has valid entitlements ie update. It receives updates via satellite not phone line.

Thanks for the quick reply, another question leading on frm your answer, does it matter how long the card is left out of the box say 6 months andthen put in again will it update then or not

As long as the card was activated (worked once) it will update again to all the channels you are intitled to on the card. It will update but it can take from a few minutes to overnight but it will come alive.
Oh ya forgot about the changeover: If your card is a BLUE sky FTV card it will never comeback from the dead. These cards have been dying over the last few months with all the entitlements stripped off them. So as long as your sky card is WHITE it will be ok, if it's BLUE its no good.
