Mechanic to check out used car

Hi, can't find a sticky about this, so just wondering about getting a mechanic to check out a user car I'm thinking of buying. It's kind of short notice, and I don't know any mechanics personally. I know the AA do this, but it costs about €300 I think: http://www.aaireland.ie/vehicle-inspections/

Anyone have other recommendations about places/people who are good at this and don't charge too much?

    Thanks.

I was always wondering about this too - would it be weird to ask your local independant mechanic to check out a car you're thinking of buying?
