Problem: Rear light cluster on one side of e90 very dim

One of the rear light clusters (the drivers side) on my car (e90 320D) is much dimmer than the other, to the point that you cannot really see the indicator in daylight.

Now, none of the lights in the cluster appear to be blown, but the brake and indicator lights are much dimmer than the ones at the other side.

Anyone got any idea what would be causing this? I would assume anything like a blown fuse would result in no lights at all working.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I'd guess either dirt on the inside of the lens (somehow) or the bulb holder isn't quite in the correct position.

Check the bulb holder is where is should be first. If that is correct, remove it and then remove the tail light cluster. It's held in by 3 nuts that are failry easy to remove. Think it's 9mm or 10mm nuts.

There was a problem with the Earth connections on the E46 cluster, but i'd assume that this was fixed and not present on the E90.

Your not getting any bulb out warnings are ya?

+1. This was a common fault on the E46. Check the connection to the loom. This can over-heat and melt.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.
Its definitely not dirt, the cluster looks almost brand new.
No warning lights on the dash either.

When you say check the loom, do you mean where it connects to the cluster?
If there was a problem with the earth, wouldn't it cause the light to not work at all rather than be dim?

Just had a quick look at this again and went fiddling around with the wires going into the back of the cluster, turns out is was just some sort of a dodgy connection.

Anyway, looks like its sorted now. Thanks for the help.

Or maybe they haven't sorted it

More than likely the earth terminal in the connector has started to degrade. If this is the case it will probably need to be bypassed at some stage in the future.. there's lots of articles on how to do it for the E46 i would assume it would be nearly the same.
