Sky HD Volume Issues

Got HD installed last week, all good on the picture side so can't complain there... But, I'm having trouble with the volume, on the non HD channels the volume seems REALLY low, I have to turn the amp up to at least three quarters to hear it clearly.
I have the box connected up to an Onkyo amp via HDMI and a optical connection for the sound.

Anywa advice would be handy here.

could be something to do with the amp.

Have you tried just using the tv? is there any sound difference between the hd and sd channels?

You are getting Dolby digital from the HD channels but PCM from the SD ones.

I do think it's the amp but I'm not sure of how to fix it...

It's not the amp,it's Sky. Just read a thread about this on avforums last night
used to be the other way round. HD volume too low compared to SD. Sky did a firmware update to address that issue but just reversing it instead of fixing it.

So there's no fix, just constant messing with the volume controls... hardly ideal really.

Try using the Coax for the Digital sound, see if there is any difference.

have you got the sky box set to output digital from optical?

hdmi only carries stereo (from sky hd box)

I've not seen where this is an option? I've selected dolby digital output but I didn't see the digital from optical...?

As Calibos said, it's not an issue with your box connections, it's a firmware upgrade sky applied to their HD boxes, to try and level the volume difference between standard def channels (MP2) and HD (Dolby Digital AC-3). Instead, they seem to have botched it and the volume output is so low for SD, you have to turn your amp up to nearly full volume in order to be able to hear the sound properly.
