Motor Tax on recently bought car!

    Hi All,

I recently bought a second hand car (22 January) from a private individual. I filled out all the details for the transfer of ownership and have since received the vehicle registration cert back with the vehicle in my name. The tax expired on the car at the end of January but to date I haven’t received anything from the department of transport about taxing the vehicle (I would assume that once the vehicle is registered in my name and appears on their records as not being taxed that I would get notification about it)! I usually use the online service to renew my tax and was waiting for this notification to do so again! I know that it doesn’t become an offence not to have a current tax disk displayed until 20 days after the last day of the month that it was taxed for. My question is – if I am stopped by a Garda is it a reasonable defence for me to say that I’m still waiting for correspondence from the department of transport to tax the car? (I’m assuming the ongoing “work to rule” in the public service is slowing down the process?)

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just take the cert and some money into the local motor tax office and pay it.
You can even get people to queue for you if you don't/can't queue yourself.

normally when a car first changes owner that automatic renewal form isn't sent out. It's a pain I know!! You need a form 100A(from motor tax office/garda station/library possibly) and to fill that in and either go in or post in to motor tax office with the correct fee.

And you can even post it!

    Here's the form - https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf

Note: Certificate of Roadworthiness is not your NCT, it's for Commercials.

OP you can get all technical with Gardai about this kind of thing, but they can make life difficult and awkward, far better to just have it all square and if you are stopped then it's all fine.
If you had an accident in the meantime would your insurance cover you? Being untaxed because "someone is on industrial action" might not be a great thing to tell the judge.:D
