Dating someone with depression

Hi. Well the above should say I was dating someone with depression. We had been going out for about 18 months, broke up five months ago but it has been a friendship since then. I knew from early on in the relationship about the depression and every now and then when he'd feel low he would go and talk to a professional and he'd be in great form. But he stopped talking to the professional in the middle of last year, was so busy with work and the timing was always out etc. Anyhow we broke up, his decision felt like he was holding me back...he needed to concentrate on himself which I understand. It has left it harder for me to move on because i've always been there to hold his hand but now I know I need to get on with my life, I can't make him get help for his depression. Right now I feel like shaking him and making him go get help, he has not been himself for a long time but I know it has to be his decision/choice. Should I just walk away now? I don't want to because we are good for each other, good friends. Any advice is appreciated.

Cut the apron strings, your not his mother you were his girlfriend. This is a joke coming from me, I`m quite mammyish to everyone so I get it, the whole getting sucked into the world of other peoples crap thing I get it, but I think your on a loser here, move on. Sounds like he moved away from you the girlfriend he respect into you the doormat he can off-load all his crap on.
