I need some advice..I am looking to buy an Audi but not to sure on the A4 or A6. Looking for the 1.9TDi version but does anyone know if the engine is the same in both? I know the A6's are bomb proof but not to sure about the A4. The year or these cars I am looking at is between 02 and 04...Any info would be great! Also if anyone knows any other glitches with either of these cars!:D

The engines would be the same, they're likely to be equally reliable.

You really need to decide how much space you need - the rear of the A4 is considerably tighter than the A6.

6-speed gearbox is soft, the window regulators give trouble too.

If you were to stretch into the 05 models of these cars, I would go for the A6. If you are getting the older one, Id go A4 as its a newer design although its very tight in the back. I mean very!

I have been edging to the A4 because of the newer design, was also leaning to the auto gearbox, but having just read another post about the auto boxes think manual will do the job. Not really worried about the back planning on using this for work so as long as drivers seat is comfy!

Save your money and get a passat, Same Engine much nicer looking than the old A6 IMO.

As mentioned the A4 is noticably smaller. than the A6

Avoid that era Audi auto gearbox. High failure rate and a minimum of 900 pounds sterling to repair.

Nah no version of the Passat would be a nice as an A4/ A6. Better finish to the Audis in fairness.

I have to agree, I have an 06 A4, but the new design is really nice. Mine is also an Auto and its not dead.

I would imagine the A6 design will be changing soon, seen as the redesigned the A4 and A5. I really like the A5 as well.

I had an A4 for 3 years, loved it but had trouble with the electrics - ended up having to change out a controller board in the drivers door as it affected the central locking. I also had problems with a thermostat which was located behind the timing belt so there was quite a bit of labour involved in sorting that.

Don't let that put you off though, I miss my old A4 and would have no problem buying another one.

I presume you're talking about how much it would cost to get done in the UK or up North? If so, that doesn't sound as expensive as I thought it would be. I'd say the one in ours is going to pack up sooner or later and I'll probably need to start shopping around, as it's starting to whine a bit.

When I was trading my 02 Passat, I looked at an 06 A4, but in the end opted for my current 06 Passat with the 2.0 TDI engine and DSG autobox.
The A4 was tiny in comparison (especially in the rear seat area) and didn't look/feel as nice/modern inside generally - which is after all where you'll spend most of your time - and nearly 2 years on I still feel like I made the right decision.
