'Freeview' on the East Coast . . . ?

    Was in Maplins (Jervis St) the other day & was amazed at the array of 'Freeview' boxes on display, I have also noticed the substantial range of Freeview TV's in the larger Tesco Stores! But is Freeview available?

    A - Is it possible to receive Freeview on the East Coast?
    B - How do I know if I can receive the signal (without buying a box)?
    c - Presuming I have an existing UHF/VHF Aerial (on a mast), is it just a
    matter of plugging in the Freeview box to see what happens?
    D - Is the Welsh range of stations as good as the FTA selection? (BBC regions
    for example), or is it only BBC Wales, ITV Wales, S4C only ......... ?

    If UK Freevies does work on the East Coast, it would save a lot of people a lot of hassle putting up FTA dishes, new cabling etc.

    Yours curioius.

    It works in some parts of the east coast. Tonnes of threads about it.

    They shouldn't really be advertising Freeview as it refers to a system outside the jurisdiction and is confusing to consumers who may believe they will get Irish DTT on them.

    I don't know about Maplins but Tesco have a notice to that effect in their stores.

    Basically anyone that had analogue tv from wales ,those that aren't just don't know about it but it's getting very widespread now.

    It's also getting quite a reputation for reliability.
    Perfect sky digital quality pictures from places I've heard of pretty much using arfon or presely from Greystones, across to rathdrum down the coast and a good bit inland to south wexford :)

    I know of quite a few new instalations.
    Blaenplwyf will become another handy option once word gets out about that too and it is spreading.

    Would Waterford City be a bridge too far:(

    @ danjo xx

    There are a couple of people I know living up near Tory Hill picking up Presili 90% of the time using Grid aerials but I'm sure if they changed the aerials for High Gain Group B this would probably be consistent Waterford City is surrounded by Hills to the East so I think the chances are not good

    It cannot be received in Waterford. There is a ruddy great big hill in wales that ensures zero reception.

    How about fethard on sea ould no obstructions between here and wales is it too far

    I think there was a poster here recently from that area who has it from presely :)

    If people in your area have aerials pointed to wales then definitely yes.

    Rule of thumb is,if you got decent analogue from wales, you will get digital

    Success at last.

    I tried to receive Blaenpwyf today and got 62 TV channels including the 5 Irish ones. Pointed a handheld grid WB antenna at BP and hey presto, 62 channels reported. Some were topup and paytv, but picture was rocksolid.

    The aerial was at rooftop, and chimneypot level, in the centre of Bray, avoiding Bray Head. Unfortunately, I could not take any signal strength readings as I had to use a TV to get reception and it was a very temporary setup. (Arms get tired quickly.) Great day for it, weather was wonderful.

    Let us hope it was a repeatable experience.

    I will try in two weeks time with a more permanent setup.

    Just looking at the maps Bray is right behind the beam to serve the North Wales peninsula which is the full 40kW. Very interesting. A lot of grids and high gain Group A's going up in that area I wager....

    Looking in Dun Laoughaire today, there are some high masts near the sea front(viewed from the Dart), but they are not pointing at BP, they are look to be pointing North. They should be able to get BP.

    Vertical = Kilkeel

    Horizontal = Divis

    BP has no CCI relationships with any main RTENL DTT transmitters.Who will be the first to buy a T2 box and get HD DTT in Ireland and check it works with MPEG4 T1....

    All kilkeel and yes they should be able to ge Blaen,if kiliney hill or bray head is not in the way.
    Even at that I wouldn't be surprised if it curved in around them.

    Nice pro installation. Did you compare the cost/set connected for DTT with Freesat? You are inland, what signal strength and quality readings do you get for BP and Preseli?

    System on a par with the old NTL Black Mountain system to pick up Clermont for the NI cable network, Caversham monitoring or the Ostend off-air pickup of Dover for the Belgian cable networks pre FTA BBC via satellite when it was stopped.
