Rent Relief Query

    Hi folks,

I have a query about rent relief.

I'm a student in college, and while in college I (along with others) am renting a house for the college year (from september to may). I have a salary from the family company of c€30k, so am paying tax at the standard rate.

Am I entitled to rent relief on the rent on the student house? I am living in the house full time for the period.
If I can claim the relief, is it the full €2k at standard rate (so €400), or is the €2k apportioned to the part of the year (9/12s roughly) in which I am in the house?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Provided your rent is over €2k for the year then you will get the full credit of €400. If say your rent is only €1500 for the year then it will be €1500 @ 20% = €300.

    Hope this answers your question.

Yes my rent is >€2k, but it is only for a portion of the year. This doesn't matter I assume?

Yes once you pay rent over €2k in any given year then you are entitled to the full credit
