SAN PEDRO -- Police are investigating the death of a 13-year-old boy who choked on a hot dog during an eating contest to raise money for Haiti at the Boys & Girls Club of San Pedro.

Noah Akers, a Dana Middle School student from San Pedro, was among about 120 elementary and middle school student participating in the fundraiser for Haiti on January 28.

The Boys & Girls Club had organized a series of activities, including musical chairs, a dance contest and an eating contest. Students paid $1 to take part.

Noah, along with 12 other kids, took part in the hot dog eating game, in which contestants had to eat a hot dog covered in whipped cream to win a candy prize. The contest was not to see who could eat the most hot dogs, according to Mike Lansing, executive director of the center.

Noah suddenly began choking during the event, and a male staff member performed the Heimlich maneuver while others called 911.

Paramedics ultimately had to use an extended pair of forceps to remove the hot dog.

Noah was alive when he was taken to an area hospital, but had been without oxygen for too long, according to doctors.

Noah was removed from life support on Monday.

An initial investigation showed the kids were properly supervised, according to Los Angeles police Lt. David McGill. He said detectives believe Noah's death was an accident.

Noah was a regular club attendee, where he was part of a college-bound program.

His parents, Paul and Bonnie Akers, were unavailable for comment.

Bad judgement - eating contests and 12 year olds do not mix.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Out of interest (and giving them the benefit of the doubt) are we simply saturated with stories of US morons killing themselves and others or are they really that out of kilter with the rest of the known universe?

Since when has a hot dog eating contest not been about who can eat the most? Is that not the point of them(bar raising money of course)?

You're right! Not only is he dead now but also he's not a winner. They especially don't like that over there.

When it's organized and sponsored by the Catholic Priests go wild fund.

Reminds me of an eating contest where I once worked. A pepper eating contest for children. WORST IDEA EVER. Thankfully I wasn't on shift at the time.

I'm shocked at the lightheartedness of this thread. I would expect people to be showing their respects like most death threads. Anyway RIP to the poor kid, yet another young man dies today after that 12 year old committed suicide by hanging himself as well.

And they wonder why their kids are fat...

With something like a hot dog though, wouldn't it be a solution to throw some fizzy drink down his throat to try to make him barf it up? I guess you might not think of it at the time, but it would surely oil the wheels so to speak or induce a reflux action?

I'm not trying to jump on any kind of anti-US bandwagon, but why isn't there ever a 'fresh green salad eating competition' (there could well be, but I'm trying to make a point here dammit ;))? Why don't they just skip the hotdog covered in whipped cream and just have the kids eating sticks of butter covered in syrup?

I guess it's comparable to our attitudes to alcohol.
