Sky + Query

    Hi,

Sorry if this is a stupid question, could someone please tell me if I buy a Sky + box from Ebay/online and connect it to my phone line, will the Sky + record facility work?

I have a contract with Sky for just the regular Sky box and have a phone line. Not sure if special subscription is required for Sky + to work?

    Cheers,

    C

You don't need the phone line for it to work. It can be handy for the call back to pair the card with the box, through the box, but for an upgrade you still have to call Sky anyway to add the Sky+ feature to the card. No special subscription is needed.

Also you need a second cable to the box from the dish and a quad lnb if there is not one already on the dish.

Dont bid too high for one on eBay. You can get a brand new Sky+ HD box now from Sky for much cheaper than before, even without the HD monthly subscription. And they will install it for you (you will need a 2nd cable to the dish).

That's true actually. A swap-out from Standard to Sky+HD without the HD subscription is €99 for the box and €60 for the install.

Only need the second cable if you want to watch something and record something else at the same time.I have a single cable Sky Plus box at my mothers.

No point having the Sky+ or Sky+HD unless you have the second cable. Otherwise the standard box would do.

I wouldn't say no point as Mam uses it to pause live tv if someone calls and also record shows when she's not there. It's perfect for her and doesn't cost anything more than the normal Sky box.

Yeah ok but if the Sky+ box is in place it might as well have its full functions. In this senario here I assume the girl wants the full facilities.

Cheapest place to get a Sky+ box is here on our very own adverts.ie

You can usually find one near your location so can call out to collect it.

I'm in the same situation as the OP, have a non + subscription but have my eyes on two + boxes.

Is it simply a matter of connecting them up and ringing sky to add the service?
Does it cost anything extra to use the recording function?
Could I not just run the cable to the dish myself?

    Cheers.

    yup just a phone call.

    and a new lnb.
    and new cable to connect,
you can do it yourself (if you have easy access to the dish. )

no extra cost . per month.

Cheers. Final question, what does lnb mean?!

Should have easy access to it as it's on a bungalow.
