Good spot, although there are no really major monuments there. You can sample Port all day! Try and go there on St Johns eve in June, when there is week of festivities and everyone goes around hitting other people with plastic hammers! Coimbra is good as well for a day or two.

Stayed there two years ago and wasn't mad about it tbh - preferred Lisbon. Parts of the city are quite seedy. Having said that tje Ribero area by the river is nice for a drink or a coffee and the port houses are well worth a visit. I think a week would be a bit long - the city is quite small. Bus tour is good for getting your bearings.

One unmissable thing to do is to take a day cruise on the Douro river - would highly recommend it. We went with this company www.douroazul.pt. The scenery is spectacular and it's one of our best memories from Portugal.

We stayed in the outskirts of the city in Foz - which is quite a nice area with good restaurants and a decent enough beach.

Stayed there a couple of years ago and loved it. Small enough city, and not a massive amount to do, but there is a lovely relaxed feel to the city, and you really could sit by the river drinking Estrella all day. We stayed in a really good value hotel slap bang in the city centre. Ill put a link up to it when I can remember the name of it:confused:

+ 1 on the boat trip up the Duoro. The only limitation of the boat I went on was that there was no shade on deck and it was scorching, one with a canvas cover on deck would be better. There probably isn't enough to do in Porto proper for a week, but day trips such as the boat, train to Coimbra or Braga would fill out the time.

Stayed at the Pestana Porto Hotel and was very impressed with the stay (price & quality).
