I love both but Al Pacino for Michael Corleone alone.

Both great actors but Di Niro for his roles in Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter . I know he mugged his comedy rolls in We're No Angels ,Analyze This and Meet the Folkers but still funny in a silly kinda way

I do love Pacino style of acting to in films like Godfather and Glengarry Glenross

Neither? Sadly both have gone from essential viewing to "meh" since the late 80s.

Pacino! His performances in Scent of a woman and carlito's way does it for me...

Contrary to reports both have done their fair share of good stuff (performance-wise) since the 80's. (tho mainly in the 90s!)

    Pacino !

They are both fab actors with such stage presence.
To get both of them on the one screen was a coup in Heat - you could almost tough the electricity! Cinematography was good too.

Pacino for his "Say hello to my little friend" quote alone..

    Gotta say Bobby.

Al's become a caricature of himself in recent years, he seems to think shouting loud qualifies as acting. Didnt bother watching Righteous Kill, but they were both great in Heat.

Pacino was 35 years ago, now the two of them are just a pair of jokers.

They have very few good films anyway.
And all this recent stuff is just ruining their legacies, especially Pacino.

Pacino for carlitos way among other's .Great presence on screen

    De niro was good too

"remember me? benny blanco from the bronx"

Loved Pacino in the Godfather films and in his earlier work - Dog Day Afternoon is brilliant. I hated Scent of A Woman. Hated it, hated the shouting.

But DeNiro was Travis Bickle, and Taxi Driver is one of my favourite films ever, I could watch it weekly and find something new in it.

Loved This Boy's Life, Casino, The Deer Hunter, the vast majority of his work. Even Midnight Run. :o

Al Pacino. Scent of a Woman, brilliant movie. Brilliant actor.

Both acting greats but I'd choose Pacino if pushed. Barely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,126 ✭✭✭][cEMAN**

Yeah, recently neither are really doing a lot to live up to their early days.

Back in the day, Pacino all the way.

DeNiro could play a part, but pacino could play it and pull at your emotions.

I'll just say one thing and let you think about it while you consider which is better...

    Crying?

    What's the ":o " all about?

Midnight Run is a classic. The script and the chemistry between De Niro and Grodin is incredible. It's one of my favourites.

I think both of them starred in more good film than most actors. They also made some crap films, but unless they do a 'Day-Lewis' on it and be incredibly fussy on what roles to play, then it's inevitable this will happen.

    Ah Midnight Run's fine.
One of the best buddy movies i can think of.
So, De Niro isn't as brooding and intense as in Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter etc but Grodin and himself worked well together.
Was that one of his forays into comedy.

Probably De Niro for me FWIW.

the thing is that at the moment neither of them are making any outstanding films, but even considering this, lately pacino just plays pacino, whereas de niro tends to vary it a bit.

i used to say i'd pick pacino because of serpico, dog day afternoon, the first two godfathers, scarface etc.

then i'd watch deerhunter or taxi driver and it'd be de niro all the way, and by the way giselle midnight run is fucking class

at the moment though i'm leaning towards de niro, probably because i haven't watched much with pacino in a while

    i'm also a bit drunk

I said I LOVED Midnight Run.

Not that that seems to matter.

I loved Midnight Run too, which is one of the reasons i think DeNiro is better.

Basically, his roles are more diverse (though i accept he's done more than his fair share of gangster movies).

Put it this way; Can anyone name a pacino comedy?

I know you said you cant say both, but come on their both Classic actors. Wouldnt be fair to choose one over the other.

    Dick Tracy

they really are both fantastic actors

i can, and have in some cases watched them in anything (good and bad)

De Niro can play a more diverse character range i feel and he is quite possibly the most intense screen actor of all time. I wish he would stop lending his name to some of the crap thats coming out but he has earned the right to have fun at this stage in his career if its what he makes him happy

Pacino, although nowadays is just playing himself, was one of the best i have ever seen in terms of presence and commitment to a part, you just believed him, whatever role he was in. he made it his.

I just dont know who to choose

somebody needs to put a gun to my head! :)

Cant we just say they both have lovely bottoms and be done with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

They are both pretty awful nowadays
I'd rather watch Al I suppose.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 458 ✭✭fuelinjection

    Bobby gets my vote.
Casino, Deer Hunter, Ronin, Jackie Brown, Cape Fear (remake), and my favourite movie "Once Upon a Time in America".

I loved Carlitos Way, but Al Pacino cannot do the range of acting that De Niro has done. Pacino cannot do pauses and quiet ! :pac:

Did anyone see the screening where De Niro audition for the part of Sonny (James Caan's role) in the Godfather? It was on the Making Of docu on the DVD. It was hands down the best screening of all the actors they showed - he was absolutely mesmeric playing the part. Would have made a brilliant Sonny.

Coppolla never forgot that screening and cast him as young Vito Corleone in Godfather 2. A totally different character, more understated and reserved, but De Niro did that brilliantly too.

I think De Niro's best work was definitely when he was younger - there was this intensity he brought to every part.

Why do people need to compare De Niro to Pacino and on what grounds do you compare them on?? Why not compare De Niro with Brando or Pacino with Day Lewis? It makes no sense.

I couldnt be forced to choose. Both were fine actors in their day. They havent had challenging roles in many years and the quality of film they have chosen has been poor but that doesnt take away from their early careers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭bonerm

    Booby gets my vote.
So he's not in the best shape of his life but do you really have insult the guy? At least he didn't turn into a Brando-esque eating machine. :pac:

pacino or day lewis?? com on!!! the whole point of the question is because its a hard one. Its a hard decision... Thats why!! comparing two great actors that come so close.. They avent been in many tp roles lately because like anything and everything, another pair of iconic actors take there place. OVER AND OUT ;)

Both are overrated. They were brilliant way back when, but they have been one-trick ponies for decades now.

bobby d for me. loved king of comedy and raging bull, also thought he was great in this boys life with dicaprio.
Pacino is great but i thought scent of a woman was utter sh!te- completely overrated. I wanted to punch him in the face every time he opened his mouth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭MickShamrock

    Easily, De Niro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 Lynxex

It has to be Robert De Niro, I mean simply look at his range, forget the gangster stereotype ( which he has mastered by the way from the low level mobster right up to the all powerful don ) look at his abstract choices like King of Comedy, look at his powerful biographicals like Raging Bull, he's played disturbed sociapaths a.k.a Travis Bickle.

The guy has played catatonic patients, created comedy icons like Mr. Focker , jesus he even played Frankensteins monster.

I love Pacino but to be honest I'd have to have Nicholson, Hoffman, Brando & Day Lewis ahead of him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭M cebee

de niro is good but the screen surely loves pacino

he can make something out of nothing

russell crowe could yet eclipse them all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭irishjay

for me pacino . ever sinse rd start doing roles for voice overs etc... rocky and bullwinkle and that stuff.... it really let the side down

carlitos way and awakenings i think, the pairs both finest films ....
