I emailed dealer last week (hard to ring during work hours) and he emailed back saying 16000KM, so I have it in writing from the dealer. I dont know why I have a niggly feeling about this. Yeah, theyll send me a new book explaining the warranty and maintenance of the car, but I dont know when - I could be voiding warrantly as we speak. Last phone call from Fiat I was told they are being printed. Dont get me wrong, fiat ireland are fine (so far) to deal with -returning calls etc, but no confirmation from them as to when the car is supposed to get serviced. When is the norm for other new cars? Or does it depend? thanks.

Depends on the car as you say, years back however it used to be common practise to being the new cars back in for a quick looksee very recently after they were bought, in case there was anything amiss. I think this practise stopped as garages were selling so many cars they had f all interest in doing it. Many folks reckon modern long service intervals were born from the same theory. New cars now apparently are normal if they use oil between services  'tis a funny old business.

    Thanks rover.
Anyone driving a new car? When is your first service due for warranty?

Definietly dip to check the oil levels every couple of hundred of miles, the last thing you want is for the oil to run low.
The best thing is it is both free & relatively easy to do.
There are some cars that get a "run-in" service after a 1,000 miles like the BMW M3 but from what I can gather "normal" cars don't get this.

Yes last car my parents bought got a run-in service at 1000 miles, think it was just a basic check to see the oil was right and nothing was out of place.

    Birdie

You don't need to get the car serviced by Fiat to keep the waranty.

Any garage can do it as long as they used the correct oil anf filters.

If there is a waranty issue once you can show the car was serviced then they have to honour it. Could save you a few bob.

My mate has is an independant service garage and has been doing lots of new cars from new incluing my brothers passat.

Not too sure about that. All very well in theory but try and persuade your main dealer that the new car was serviced correctly by someone else. No way I would chance that

Lucky enough to have a new car, dealer doesn't want to see it until it has covered 20k or on its 2nd birthday - I asked twice if he was sure - he was!

Due to changes to EU legislation in October 2003, you can now have your NEW vehicle serviced by an independent garage. This WILL NOT invalidate your warranty. The vehicle manufactures are required by law to honour your vehicles warranty providing it has been serviced by in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications

But how can you persuade the main dealer that the car was maintained correctly by an independant garage. I think the main dealer often does eveything possible to invalidate the warranty- eg wrong type of oil, late service, poor driving technique. Still don't think I would chance that. It is the law and thats fine in theory but try and implement it is a different story.I don't know any new car owners that bring their motors to independant garages for servicing while still undar warranty from main dealer. Its just not worth chancing it

Very true, even before 2003 once the indy garage (or main dealer of another brand) used approved parts etc there was no bother with the warranty. Garages like people thinking otherwise though, all part of the money racket. Full main dealer service history essential at trade in time etc, bla bla bla. They retail plenty of stuff off their forecourts with non main dealer historys and it doesn't have any effect on the price.
