Quick question. How does one replace the background light for the fan direction in a 03 toyota avensis. I thought the knob pulled off but it seems fairly firm.

Local garrage said it would take a few hours.

It depends on the model of avensis. Is it up to '03 or '03 on?

If it's the newer version you would have to get the bulbs off a main dealer. There's 4 altogether and they're not expensive.

It still shouldn't take anywhere near a few hours.

'03 on I think. It was bought new around the time of the special olympics.

The knobs pull straight off, but they don't give you any access.

    Here's how to do it

    Open the passenger door
    Open the cupholder
    Open the glovebox
Tug at the cupholder and the right hand side of the plastic trim running the width of the dash (with cupholder, pass seatbelt warning light etc) will pop out, from underneath the glovebox prise the other side off.

Disconnect the plug going to the passenger seatbelt reminder (beside the cupholder)

    Unscrew the gearknob
Pull on the surround of the gear gaitor and the ashtray panel should pop out. unplug the cig ligher plug and remove panel.

There should then be 2 T20 Torx bolts above the radio and 2 10mm bolts below the heater controls. From what I remember the radio and the heater are clipped together.

Unclip the radio and undo the plugs behind it (remove the radio to give you room to work)

You should then have access to the back of the heater controls.

Remember to plug back everything when refittig the radio, ashtray and long panel attached to the seatbelt reminder.
Be careful not to cut the leather(ish) gear gaitor with the end of the gearstick when fitting the ashtray panel and don't overtighten the gearknob as the plastic threads can break if you go too far.
