Hi .... no response..????.as was said to you last weekend Sundays for most on here are club spin days and everyone goes out with their respective club groups......

Saturday is the day for meeting up with various random guys as we did this morning... so maybe for next weekend plan your spin for Saturday that is of course if it possible for you to do so

    Cheers

I think Sally Gap is impassible with snow. At least it was during the week

My day ended before it began :(

Got up at 8:45, managed to get breakfast and ready by 9, out the door by 9:05.

Heading down the road and after a kilometre I hear "dum----dum----dum". Thinking I had a flat again I stopped and felt the tyre, pressure fine so carried on. Stopped after another 100m and looked at the tyre properly. Massive bulge and the tyre is ready to pop off part of the rim.

I remember this happened yesterday when Planet X and myself put in the new tube. Let out most of the pressure and turned home (9:15, was already racing to Dundrum so it was game over now), pretty annoyed.

I havent gone yet Mike, if you're still up for it. (didnt think anyone meeting so giving it extra hour for temp to rise a little). Be leaving city centre between 11-11.30. If not no probs.

Edit: I can bring a spare tyre if needed.

Thanks for the offer Eggie but I'm happy sitting in now, the brief adrenaline rush has passed (I had a "stay in bed" moment like last week followed by a "15 minutes, I can do it" one). I think that's my cycling for the weekend done now, I'll probably just spend a few hours cleaning my bike :)

As The title says Sunday Spin
I just had a great spin around Lough Mask in Glorious Sunshine with absolutely no wind. When the weather is right cycling in this counntry is so good :D

The step-up spin went from the Park today so you may not have missed anything if you were headed to Dundrum. We went around the course for next week's race. 90km, 30km/h average, there were some fast bits. Also some very very slippy bits, I almost came off twice on corners as did many others although luckily there were no crashes.

That sounds like the type of course I would not do well on. Going to head out tomorrow and have a look, I don't suppose you have a map from your garmin?

What about potholes? Last week El Tonto took us around the Brittas route, there is one fast bit downhill (I think back towards the start) and it's potholes EVERYWHERE, I honestly can't see how a group would make it through.

I have attached the course (red bit) and elevation profile. It starts at the Dunboyne GAA club on the Summerhill road and heads out towards Summerhill, turning towards Culmullin and then doing two loops anti-clockwise before heading back to the GAA club. Not 100% sure on the finish but I think it is same as the start. Note we only did one loop so the race length is around 65km.

Plenty of potholes but honestly it's the slippy stuff on the corners that is the risk, I wouldn't care about the potholes. In particular watch the right turn to Culmillin, el_tonto crashed there last year and he was not the only one.

No puncture today, it was just the tyre bulging off the rim, like a swelling at a single point. It happened yesterday too but Planet-x managed to get it back on. I'm not sure is it the tyre or the tube but it's never happened before.

Continental GP4000 in case anyone is wondering.

Vets "North Dublin tour" this morning, up as far as Balbriggan n back. Three came off, not sure of my Northside geography, but, coming down from The Nags Head Hill down into a little village at the bottom, sharp right hander up a hill. Greasy as ............ Even going up the next hill, my rear wheel was spinning a bit.

Our "Jimm" was one of the victims. No injuries but will be nice n sore tomorrow I reckon.
    Get well jimm.

Bring 30kph up to 40kph and above and it'll happen big time.

    Thanks Planet X

That village is called Naul and road surface at the junction sure was slippery. Someone said it was oil on the road. Just some bruising and road rash and expect to be sore for a few days. Bike is fine, but think I will leave it in for a check over and service. Could do with grippier tyres too. I was more fortunate than the guy behind me who may have broken his thumb. Smashed his derailleur hanger also.

Didn't see you afterwards. Did you hammer it back to the Park with the Swords lads?

I changed tubes, the one in it was deformed, looked like an aneurysm. The tyre bead seemed fine, as did the side walls. They are new enough tyres with not that much use so I would have been surprised if they were the problem.

New tube in so tomorrow will be the acid test.

Sounds like the bead wasn't seated properly. I had that happen before with GP4000s. Cycled for around 10km and then it blew out the side.

If you roll the wheel along the ground while the tyre is deflated, pressing down on it a little, that can help the bead to seat better on folding tyres.

I have a speed lever and find that it is a great help in getting a tube fitted properly in that it pushes the tube into the tyre as one is moving the tyre back onto the rim.
Also to prevent the tube bulge that us common around the air valve once the tyre is fitted I ket the small bit of air out of the type and using the valve push up into the tyre. Usually works.

Another tip I picked up on that, I think from Leonard Zinn, is to always start and finish your tyre mounting OPPOSITE the valve rather than at it.

These days I inflate partially, maybe to 40-50 PSI, and then do a visual check to make sure the bead is seated properly all the way around. It is pretty obvious if it isn't, you will see a bit of a bulge.

How you feeling this morning. Tight?

Yeah, 6 of us took off about 10 miles out. Good interval work. Heavy rain approaching town froze us.

It's not a problem as long as you make sure you seat the bead. Ultremos are also good tyres though.

    Zinn.
    Zinn wrote:
When mounting any tire, but especially a tight tire, you need to make sure to finish at the valve stem, and not start at the valve like so many people do. This will significantly reduce the chance of that happening.

I read that to mean: start opposite the valve, and work your way round both sides simultaneously until you finish at the valve.

That's how I read it too. The leaflet that came with my tyres had the same advice, i.e. always finish at the valve.

Feeling surprisingly better than expected, just a few minor aches now. Was expecting worse.

Thanks el tonto. I was back on the bike straight away after the spill in Naul. We then headed through Balbriggan, Skerries, Lusk, back of the airport, Finglas and finish in the Phoenix Park + another 10km for me to Clondalkin. Feel a lot better tonight.
