Impreza Engine Question

My brothers 2003 impreza has had some engine problems, long story short we're picking up a second hand engine for it.

His is a 2003 1.6ts engine.
I can get hold of another 2003 1.6ts engine for €750 or a 2005 1.6ts engine for €500.

Just wondering, how can I tell will the 2005 engine be suitable?

I would think they are the same, but wouldn't be sure. Power wise I think they are the same anyway.

Out of interest what went wrong with the engine - they are usually pretty solid.

Timing belt went and he thinks that because of that a few of the valves need replacing as well as some other work. Long story short, a new engine looks like it will work out cheaper than a repair

Im pretty sure they are the same are the price quoted for a complete engine including heads cams belt etc or just the block !
