Am hopefully doing this one in conjunction with the above charity. I have a guaranteed entry after been refused for the previous 3 years.
Just wondering does anybody else intend running it. would be interested in any advice or just getting in touch with others hoping to do it.
    Thanks

Yeah me and my mate are doing it. Well thats the plan anyway. Havent signed up for it yet but we qualify through times from dublin last year. Expensive though.

you're way out of my league if you have times like that. I had to wait 3 years and am getting slower each year.
Very expensive. I tried everyway I could to do it on my own but the costs were extortionate. The accomodation is the worst part of it.
Cost is prohibitive alright but it's astonishing that it doesn't affect it's popularity. I have heard so much about it I really want to do it at least once.

What about staying in a hostel? They can be quite good in terms of providing the essentials. Plus the atmosphere would be electric assuming that most people staying there would be doing the marathon aswell.

Good idea. Anybody else done it and can recommend any decent ones and in a safe area. What are your own plans?

I'd really wanna get my ass in gear and sort the details out. I'd say I'll go for the hostel option...........if theres any vacancies left that is. I'd say even getting a room in a hostel would be difficult. Went over to germany for oktober fest a few years ago and was very lucky to get a room in a hostel never mind a hotel. So I'd say it'd be the same woth NYC marathon. If you wanna jump in with me and my mate we'd be delighted to have you along, just send me a PM.

Very good of you. Thanks. Will have a look and see what is available.

I was in NYC during marathon weekend 2008 and had no problems getting a hotel room. Just checked my email and we booked our trip during July, and got hotel room with no problem (Milford Plaza, which is reasonably priced, very central and was also one of the shuttle bus pick-up points to get to the start).

tunguska - do you know whether getting into the marathon based on qualifying time gets you any preferential treatment -i.e. is their a separate start for those who got in on a qualifying time? I hope to get into NYC in the same way.

Me too. Unfortunately you can't use a qualifying time from this year (after January 31st) for this year's entry so you'l be looking at 2011 (unless you qualify in Boston).

Just wondering what the qualifiing time is ?

Depends on your age and gender.
    Assuming you're male:
    18-39 = 2:55
    40+ = 3:10

for the rest, check out their website:

Ive entered the lottery, from a financial point of view I kinda hope I dont get through. But if I get a place Ill do it for sure.
At least Ill have got the ball rolling towards guaranteed entry.

Exactly. I didn't want to get a place for the last 2 years due to injury. Would recommend anybody thinking of doing it to go down this route. Seems to be very difficult to get an international place in the lottery

Also entered the lottery for the first time to get the ball rolling for entry before I turn 50 . For some strange reason it is the first race my wife has said she and the kids would love to travel to. - could be an expensive race.

I have a place this year through the lottery (deferred from last year). Doesn't really suit to go to NYC this year though. It's a bit annoying though, as you need to confirm your lottery place by 15 March and my sub-3 attempt isn't until 25 April....

...that said, there may be no sub-3 attempt on 25 April as I'm struggling to shake off a calf injury and am currently on the couch with an ice pack on my ankle following a nasty stumble on my run earlier. Am sooooooooo lucky to be married to a physio!!!

Yes. However, as you give your credit card details when you register for the lottery, when your name comes out, you pay for that year's entry fee. You then get the option to defer to the following year (but your entry fee from that year is non-refundable). My name came out in the lottery for 2009 race, so I paid €170ish for last year's race. I then deferred, and I have until March this year to accept my 2010 place (however I haven't paid for that yet).

When exactly are the lottery places announced? I know the closing dates is March but when would you find out for sure (I've read contradictory dates).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,503 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

From last year's registration e-mail (may be different this year):
The lottery for U.S. applicants will be held in mid-June, and the international lottery will be held in mid-May.

The lottery for this year takes place for everyone at an earlier stage.
    http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/apply.htm

    "Lottery Applications
Lottery applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on March 15, 2010.

NYRR will hold the lottery drawing for all applicants in late-March. "

Just checked my email, and when I was successful in 2009 lottery I got an email on May 19th. However, the original email I got confirming my lottery entry said that the lottery would take place in mid-May that year.

Basically, they should tell you very soon after the lottery. I think you also get an email if you're unsuccessful.

Im pretty sure it does entitle you to preferential treatment Peckham, in terms of elite athlete entry anyway. Im going to send them en e-mail to confirm this.
Sorry to hear about the injury, ive been out for the guts of 7 weeks at this stage and its been a nightmare. Sorry, I know thats not making you feel any better, but I need to have a good moan about it.
