Looking to buy a very cheap car

I am on the dole and am looking to get a car for maybe €1000 or less.
I know I am entering the ****mobile market but there are ads for starlets, corollas, primeras, micras and the like with long NCTs for this price.
I know very little about cars, i know how to check oil and antifreeze and that but i'm no mechanic.
If a car has a new NCT is it a decent bet that it won't fall apart on me or is the NCT only a very basic thing?
I don't know any mechanics personally that could come with me and I can't afford to hire one to look at the car before I buy it.

Buying a car is one thing on the dole. Getting tax, insurance, servicing and petrol are quite another. Add it all up before committing to one.

Plenty of cheap runarounds out there within your budget but if your knowledge of cars is limited you could buy a lemon.
There must be someone you know who drives and knows a bit about cars.
Buy a small car micra, corsa or similar to keep your running costs down.

Its a decent bet that its reasonably intact, but thats about it. It makes no promises on how long the thing will last.

My 2c on cheap cars - go for something older. You'll get a better '95 for €1k than a '99.

With luck you will be fine, my last three cars cost €850, €430 & €800. All three needed small little things doing but nothing major, the €430 one was off the road a year with no NCT.

If a car has a long NCT, has fresh enough oil in it and clean coolant with no signs of mayo like muck in either, starts fine from cold with no blue smoke, drives straight and the seller is the actual owner and not someone who picked it up a month ago to make a few quid on you should be fine. Do see the car when it is cold though, check oil and coolant before starting it and get the seller to turn her over while you have a peak at what comes out the exhaust, 99% of cars will be fine as worn rings and valve seals are not as common these days as ten years ago unless there is mega miles on the clock.

A car that has been looked after is easy to spot, it should be clean looking rather than looking like it has just been cleaned if you know what I mean.

Best of luck and do ask for advice if you need to before you buy :)

Christ no. I could never share a car with him! It would get way too messy when it came to anything going wrong with the car... apparently I'm a "crap driver" (by his standards lol) so if anything went wrong with the car it would be my fault.
