Hi, a friend is planing to go around the world.

He's starting from Ireland and going to the base of South America and then up through the continent to reach North America (Canada).

Then he will go through Asia & Australia and back to Europe (I'm not sure if he's going to Africa though!).

Does anyone have any advice about flight tickets that will cover these destinations or specific travel companies that organise this type of trip. THANKS.

One option is a "round the world ticket". This is a single ticket that covers all your flights. The conditions generally are that you must keep moving in the same direction (either east or west), must finish your trip within a certain time frame (usually around one year, so there is no rush) and will have to stick with one group of airlines. If you are planning to circle the world with lots of stops along the way, this is often much better value than booking a dozen or more flights separately.

If he's looking for a travel agent to organise this it will cost an absolute bomb. The only way to do this thing really is independently. How long is he taking? Argentina to Canada would take a year to do properly.
As for flights, he could just pop into Trailfinders and have a chat. They're very helpful and will let him know straight away if he can afford it.

A Travel agent is not just expensive in this case. It is simply the wrong way to go about such a trip. A long trip, around the world, is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take in dozens of cultures, to really dive in and explore the world. If you want someone else to organize it so that you can sit on a pre-booked bus and shoot pictures from the window... well, you might as well just watch the Discovery Channel.

If done right, this can be a trip your friend will remember until the end of his life. But that requires investing time and effort, not just during the trip but also before.

thanks for your help so far. I'm afraid I can't really answer any of the questions that have been thrown up because I don't know the ins and outs of his trip.

When I posted in the begining I was really only looking for suggestions, so if anyone has any specifics about worldwide trips that they did or tickets that they bought related to this post, please let me know, Thanks.
