I can just imagine the thinking of the average driver in Ireland -

'I have paid my tax, I will drive in whichever lane I choose, and no one will tell me otherwise.'

    +1

The amount of muppets I see every day on the M7 between monasterevin and Newbridge is staggering. Right lane hoggers sitting at 115kph and not a chance of them moving left...

Only one thing for it........ machinegun.gif

If you drive with your dipped headlights or even fulls it helps a lot. I know thats not really nice but drastic things call for drastic measures. Allthough I have a few cars and they seem to move quicker for some cars more than others. Quite unusual actually

Best is q7 with lights on especially if you get a good run behind them. I got a white passat of the audi dealer while i was getting a service and they were running like mice:):)

I was driving a blue focus with no hubcaps as a company car a while back, nobody ever hogged the overtaking lane when I was behind them

when I was in the UK, i had a new (at the time, would be about 10 years ago) white mondeo and you should have seen EVERYONE shift from the overtaking lanes as I came up behind them. :D

I've never had a car before or since then that got people out of the way like that. I almost wanted to keep it. :)

Instead of spending a fortune on changing speed limits in Dublin city, why not install these on motorways/ dual carriageways like they have in Australia?

    Keep-Left.jpg

I hope that's what those new electronic billboards are for on the M50! My hope grows when I see it like the pic below but dashed again when I remember what country I live in

ffs it's endemic in the driving population in this country to drive in the outside lane at 120kph, and the n7/9 naas road or whatever it is just confuses people about what lane to drive in so you have the middle lane huggers, that picture was quality and they should put it up over every Irish road/motorway, it's down to the standards of driving in this country, you pass your test, given your pink licence and you can go out and drive on a motorway (that you've never even gone near cos you're to nervous) without care. Silly

had another one last night on my way home (twice).

first on the N3 dual carriageway who refused to pull in and just kept going faster and faster in the outside lane in front of me, refusing to pull in even though there were no other cars on the road. just to see how fast he'd go rather than pull in I kept behind him and we were (allegedly) going VERY VERY fast and he still wouldn't pull in.

then there wasn't really any overtaking opportunities on the way until we got to the long straight bit of road before the first set of lights outside navan and he was pootling along doing 75-80km/h with a big gap between him and the cars in front so i pulled out to overtake as there was a nice big gap before anything was coming the other way, but as i got alongside him he saw me and started to speed up just enough to stop me getting past him until i had to pull back and cut in behind him because of traffic that was coming the other way.

anyway, if you have a silver cavan reg A4 and were coming back down the N3 at around 11pm last night, I'd really like to punch you in the face for repeatedly being such a complete dick. :D

Person did this to me yesterday. After passing she started to tailgate me for no reason until eventually slowing down to the 45mph she was doing before I overtook her.

if anyone who doesn't like being overtaken is reading this thread, can I be the first to suggest that if you don't like being overtaken, then don't drive so freaking slow!!!

i'm not asking for much, i don't expect everyone to drive everywhere at light speed, but if you are in a procession of traffic i expect you to make a reasonable effort to keep up with the cars in front of you when there are people queuing behind you or i'm going to overtake you the first chance i get. doubly so if the vehicle in front of you that you can't keep up with is a bus/lorry/4x4/hearse.

and YES i have actually seen all of those vehicles overtake a car (hearse included) who was driving THAT slow.

One really bad moment for me was on the motorway and I was doing 120 and passing out a line of traffic. There were about 10 cars and it took a while to finish it cause Id say they werent driving too much slower then 120.

Anyway, throughout the manoeuvre there was a guy up my arse like no other. I was happy to pull into the inside lane when I felt it safe but once I had passed the line of traffic I realised that by the time I could get enough distance between me and the last car I over took I would be a little too close to the next car. I always use the 2 second rule. I try to judge it so when I pull in there is about 2 seconds between me and the guy behind and the same for on front.

Anyway, I had decided that it would be unsafe (2 second rule wise) to pull into the inside lane so I kept going, low and behold the guy behind me tries to undertake, is actually just a head of me but because of the distances involved he didnt have a chance to cut on front of me and ended up getting held up by the car infront.

Then once I pass Im able to pull back into the inside lane and all is fine.

Ugh, then one day I was at the end of a line of a few cars on a singlecarrage way and since I knew I wasnt going to be able to pass all of them I kept my distance from the car infront. Then a truck who was up my arse gets sick of it and overtakes me on a turn. I didnt see the point of what he was doing because he ended up taking up all the space I was keeping as safety and was tailgating the car infront, and he had cut me up on the corner.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. . . Its as if the distance thats created by the two second rule is actually perceived as an opportunity to overtake :S

    :S

First of all guy behind You shouldn't be angry with You as You were doing 120 which is max

Another think is I'm always trying to judge situations like this(whether I'm gonna make it or not) when I'm still overtaking, especially that as You said You had plenty of time because speed difference wasn't great. Pulling in to the slow lane and then coming back isn't very safe and confusing for everybody else around You :)
but all together its fella behind You fault , nobody can push You to increase speed over the limit :)

the fact someone is travelling at the speed limit bears no relevence at all. regardless of if a perseon is driving at the speed limit or even over it, the rules of the road regarding blocking an overtaking lane remain. the job of enforcing speed limits is up to the garda, not other road users.

in this particular case though as described by bbk, he he appears to have been in the right and the guy driving right behind him was in the wrong. pulling in at a safe place on the inside lane after overtaking is obviously preferable to cramming yourself into a small spot and possibly causing other people to brake dangerously.

not to mention driving right up someones hole for no reason.

I'd actually almost forgotten about another classic incident on the way home the other night with a driver who was driving VERY erratically whenever anything was coming the other way.

he kept speeding up when there was no oncoming traffic, but then braking heavily whenever anything was coming the other way (on the N3, so hardly a narrow back road) and weaving around on the road.

i'd decided that he wads either drunk or had some sort of weird night bindness issue by the time there was only a couple of cars between me and him, but when i passed him i could see immediately what was going on.

he didn' have any headlights at all and only one sidelight so he was relying on his main beam whenever there was no oncoming traffic and whenever he had to turn them off due to cars coming the other way he had to slow right down as he couldn't see where he was going at all!

i flashed and beeped him as I passed as he was driving like a complete looper, but couldn't believe it when i finally got past him and looked in my rear view mirror and saw just a single sidelight until he stuck on his main beam again.

unbelievable, particularly as he'd driven past two open petrol stations which would have had spare bulbs, even taking into account he should have already had a spare set in the car anyway.

They still do try and push you over, and its happened to be a few times. I have been pushed to go over the speed limit in some situations. Pure intimidation. Very annoying.

You made a good point that if I had pulled back in to the slow lane (ignoring the 2 second thing) I would have very quickly needed to go back into the overtaking lane, which is damn near suicide sometimes.

It is annoying alright, but its different story on motorway when somebody is abusing fast lane for miles and miles overtaking other cars doing 70-80km/h, not even thinking about letting You through...then You can get annoyed.

in many occasions or ...very often You'll see that fast lane is full and slow lane barely in use... why? People are to lazy to let others overtake them, to much hassle looking in the mirror, change the lane, then come back again...why bother?

you had to ruin it didn't you? :p

a very pig part of the problem when there is three lanes is people totally ignoring the inside lane altogether, so that you have a few cars sitting in the middle lane totally ignorant of everyone else on the road and then a procession of cars in the outside lane trying to overtake them, but limited to the speed of the guy hogging the outside lane.

at what point does roof mounted laser guided rockets become a reasonable upgrade? :D
