Sky phoneline no longer required for multiroom?

I'm getting a sky hd multiroom upgrade installed next week from 2 standard boxes. I asked the sky guy in the booth at Liffey Valley is there any update on the phoneline requirement for multiroom. He advised me they had recieved a memo from Sky recently to say the ethernet port on the back of the sky boxes would be activated 'soon'. It can then be used over a broadband connection to monitor the box instead of requiring a phoneline . Does anyone know any more details on this? Unfortunately the guy didn't have a time-frame to say when this would all happen.

I'm sure Wizard007 will be able to confirm. (doubt there is a memo yet) , sometime in the future maybe.

At this moment in time you NEED a phone line connected to both boxes.

That's correct John. We have had no memo regarding this. I know something is on the way but I have no idea when.

There was mention in passing lately from Sky regarding the ethernet port and broadband but it was totally unrelated.

For the moment, no land line = no multiroom.

    I dont get it.

If the ethernet port is activated you will still require a wire from your router (which needs a phoneline) to connect it!

Seems daft to be honest. What real difference does it make exactly ?

Unless they bring out a wifi solution though you still require a phoneline in your house!

Only ADSL broadband needs a phone line there are many other ways to get broadband.

I have UPC Cable and my phone is with them also so i dont have any phoneline with eircom etc

Whatever broadband you have, you will still have to have it wired to the sky box. So you will still have that hastle of extra cables unless they go the wifi route!!!!

I would guess the majority of householders have wifi via a wired connection.

Irish bars, the world over (well, OK, within the ASTRA footprint anyway!) rejoice. Assuming this is true, that is!

So you reckon most householders in the country use the likes of 3G and Irish broadband products that require no phonelines ?

    I doubt it.

This is very interesting as there are rumours - it's almost certain - of a new Sky software upgrade soon to be downloaded to all boxes, specifically to tackle the whole C/S problem that's costing Sky a forutne. It wouldn't be a strech to think they would activate the ethernet port too.

It'd be great it they added on some streaming features too to allow streaming other Sky boxes in the same house etc.

They ARE activating the Ethernet port, but it is for their new real Video on Demand service, Anytime+. Can't see them removing the requirement for a phoneline with multiroom however, its far too easy to spoof "phone homes" from two completely different addresses over the internet using proxies than with a phoneline which is nigh on impossible to spoof. Also, only Sky+HD boxes can connect to the internet.

I remember this being mentioned over a year ago.

Directv in states are already using it.

No ideas if Sky will charge for it though ?
