Laptop fan\overheating

I have a Compaq something or other laptop and lately its fan has been working overtime, getting very loud. Also its been giving off a lot of heat which would say to me the fan isn't working as well as it should.

Any suggestions on how to fix this annoying little issue aside from the inevitable "get a new laptop" replies?

    Cheers

Are you blocking the vents when you use it? Your lap is ironically the worst place for a laptop.

If you're not. the fans or vents could be dirty. A can of compressed air is good for giving it a quick blast to remove dust.

If it is an overheating CPU then not sure what you could do.

The vents are underneath the laptop which isn't a very smart place to put them really...unless I hold the laptop in the air away from me when I'm using it, the vents are always going to be partially blocked in some way.

I'll check out the fans\vents for dirt and see if that does the trick..

    thanks

I know what you mean, but it is advised always to use a laptop on a hard smooth surface where vents are clear. Never on your actual lap.

You should get a tray, something like those dinner trays for your lap or there are one's specifically designed for laptops available in Ikea.

You could also try hoovering out the back of your laptop. I did that to mine and fluff came out of it  A friend of mine had a laptop that was overheating and when he opened up the covering over the vents, he found some seriously packed-in fluff around the fans. It wasn't a Compaq though so perhaps yours might not be as easy to open up as his was.

Dirt and dust might well be the cause but I've a Compaq 6710b and it does it if a process is hanging/using 50% total CPU cycles or 100% of one core the fan kicks in and the laptop gets noticeably hotter. Use your Task manager to check it out
