    Hi all,

Looking at getting a netbook but I haven't a clue where to start. I'm looking for one that'll allow for everyday internet browsing along with being able to read photos from a digital slr camera and videos from a Flip Ultra HD. I'd use the Ubuntu Netbook v9 os on it. Can anyone recommend one suitable ? I already have an ordinary laptop so I just need something ultra portable with good battery life able to do the above. Thanks in advance !!

Ive just had a quick play around with a Dell Mini10 and first impressions were good.

Battery life is about 2 hours with the standard out of the box. There is another higher rated battery available. Very light and small.
OS is fully functional version of win 7 but can also be gotten with Ubuntu.

Amazon best selling is always a good place to start. Link

The Samsung NC10 and N130 are still favourites, and personally I like the Asus 1005HA a lot. Normally i'd be looking for Win7 on a new machine, but if you plan on putting Ubuntu on it, i'd say just pick up an old discounted XP machine (like the aforementioned Samsungs there at the top of the list). £225 for that Asus 1005HA, i'd probably be going for that.

I had that for a while and there are big issues with the software manager. If I was you I'd just get regular Ubuntu or Mint.

Don't know how good these are but got a Komplett email announcing a "bargain" that closes 14th Feb.

Picked up an Asus 1005HA recently, based on reviews and the 8 hour battery life.

Thanks for the replys. I've heard good things about the Asus netbooks, is the Atom 1.6Ghz currently the fastest netbook cpu ??

I bought the Dell Mini 10v for the OH and it's excellent. I set it up to run Windows XP (which is perfect for netbooks). It can run 720p mkvs (with the CoreAVC codec) and I have it loaded with every Popcap game as well as complete catalogues of every SNES and Mega Drive game.

On a recent 10 hour flight it was a god send. I bought it with the 6 cell battery (which is brilliantly designed, it doubles as a grip to carry the netbook, and tilts the netbook up to give a comfortable angle on the keyboard) I bought a spare 6 cell battery also. All in we get around 15 hours battery life out of both of them.

First flight I've been on that, no pun intended, flew by. Rewatched The Matrix and Tron in 720p then watched some of the first season of "Lie to me". Then started playing through the original Sonic games.

Just get the Ubuntu version and wipe it. Ubuntu is free so the cost of the OS will be deducted from the price.

They don't seem to offer that on the customise page, they only give you the choice of Windows 7 :(

Yeah I checked there and they seem to of removed it. Contact them directly and tell them a friend of yours bought the netbook with Ubuntu a few months back and that you are looking to get the same deal. See if they'll accommodate you.

Also, if you want to get a sense of size head into a PC world. They have most of the current popular netbooks on display (including the Mini 10). It might help seeing the netbooks first hand.
