... an international athletics medal holder :D?

Was out running last week and "met" Gillian O' Sullivan running in the opposite direction. We exchanged pleasantaries.

Then this morning I was dropping our little girl to the creche play-school () and met Olive Loughnane.
The eerie thing was I had just watched the programme screened about her over Christmas, this morning (kids up early). Told her that as well!

That's 2 World Championship silver medalists in a week.

And don't get me started about Olympic silver medalists and an autographed cap ;).

    Jim'll fix it? :)

I once had the pleasure of wearing an Olympic silver medal (marathon distance). No prizes for guessing who owned it. I was too young to understand the significance back then. I understand it now!

I used to go out with the sister of a European medalist and Olympian. Although she wasn't a medalist back then.

Not so recent, but I used to help organise the Jersey Spartan AC annual dinner. My claim to fame was never failing to land an Olympian as star guest, without costing too much money. Let's see if I can remember them all

    Christina Boxer
    David Hemery
    Bruce Tulloh
    Mary Peters
    Sonia O'Sullivan
Dalton Grant (after Liz McColgan pulled out)
    Myrtle Augee
    David Moorcroft

All were/are amazingly nice people. Mary in particular was a darling.

I've met Catherina McKiernan twice in the last few years. Very nice lady and very witty also.

My wife had Ben Johnson chat her up in the Shelbourne Hotel Leisure Centre a few years back. She didn't even realise who he was until one of her friends told her after. :D He's not the sharpest tool in the shed by all accounts....

I met a Denny Gold Medal sausage there last weekend, does that count.

Am afraid the amount of Gold Medal winners down in Mayo, but I have a mate who is a transplant olympics gold medal winner. So in actual fact he maybe more a winner than "the rest of them".

Good man Gibbo, it must have been that bank account of yours that convinced her otherwise ;)

EDIT: My Dad met Andy Lee wandering the streets of Westport there before Xmas at 7am, so that can be clocked up too ;)

There was a time there when I couldn't move without bumping into Paula Radcliffe. She ran in Loughrea a few years back against Sonia (met her there too) I was queing for the loo when Paula came out and held the door open for me!

Then a few weeks later I was driving in Limerick and I kindly let a "jogger" cross the road. Sure enough it was Paula again , I think she shouted "sorry about the state of the loo" or something to that effect:D

A couple of years later coming from Heathrow to Shannon myself and my wife were on board waiting for take off when in the door comes Paula again. Sits down behind us apologising. I said Paula "that was a long time ago, forget it" She just looked at me.

Sure enough after takeoff up she hops again to the loo and got caught behind the drinks trolley and like us all had to wait for ages to sit down again. Even world record holders can't catch a break!

Ger Hartmann's clinic in Limerick had all manner of champs coming to Limerick. Moses Kiptanui past me out on a run near UL once.

    Does this guy count?

He was hanging around at the European Cross Country saying hello to people so I took his picture. ;)

Used to be an annual athletics event in the small town I lived in the UK many, many years ago which was always attended by the top guys in the UK team. Got loads of autographs of the likes of Coe, Ovett, Thompson, Cram and whoever else was around at the time. Think the autographs all got binned since though. Geoff Capes was a member of the same club that me and my brother were in as well, he was a very scary man to be in range of when he decided to have an argument with the one legged coach of the club. Lots and lots of very loud shouting going on between two big scary people, and I think I ran away from the track that day.
