weight training for martial arts

We were yapping in the gym yesterday about this thing we've been thinking of doing for a while now.

Would anyone be interested in a seminar on how to gain strength for your chosen sport/art? Without sounding too arrogant, we are the experts in this field. We've done the same for GAA and Rugby I've just convinced my partners that there would be enough interest from the MA community.

We'll run it if there's enough interest. It would be day long, from 10-5 or so with practical and theory work.

I didn't want to post this in the seminars thread as I'm just guaging interest and I know there's no discussion allowed there.

Count me in Barry. I am researching this stuff at the moment and would be interested in some hands on work.

    Good idea.

Depends on, cost, where it is and when but I would be interested. I'd let the other club members know as well.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

We will price this as competitively as possible, based on our expected numbers. We're looking to do it in and around March. The day will include basic strength theory, programming and periodisation, plus practical demos and maybe an oul training session too. :) I'll post more info and details as we work it out.

In the meantime anyone interested can continue to post here to register interest.

interested but wouldnt be around in march at all. Great idea.

I already do weight training, and so far I've been quite happy with the results, but I would be interested in seeing if I could get better coordination between time spent on the mats and time spent in the squat rack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭nobbo

Definitely interested, would you do a small bit on each MA or concentrate on MA in general?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,441 ✭✭✭Killme00

I would be interested in seeing if I could get better coordination between time spent on the mats and time spent in the squat rack.

+1 on the balance between strength, conditioning and on the mat training (drilling/sparring)

Obviously you would need to assess where you are at at the start, set a goal and make a plan to get there. Im not sure who said 'if your not assessing then you're guessing'. :P

How the assessment and resultant training is geared towards different martial arts will be interesting. Judo and BJJ are similar in that both require you to wear pyjamas but would require different muscle groups (this is a question more than a statement) and although strength training might be similar up to a point, where/when does the specialization occur. On the mats i guess.

From another perspective the Mendes bros gave an excellent seminar in IP last week. One of the question put to them was to break down their training. They responded that they train four times a day:

    1) Drilling
    2) Rolling with high level black belts (all out sparring)
    3) Rolling different coloured belts (maybe choose one technique to work on and improve while rolling with someone good but not quite the highest level)
    4) Strength training

Now, i dont train four times a day but applying a similar model to my weekly training makes it look like i do too much strength and conditioning and not enough BJJ. However that doesnt take into account my starting point ie I was weak and unfit when i started my current cycle. The weighting between the sessions will change again when i next assess.

Personal goals (grading, competition etc) will also have an effect on the model.

Okay, we're going to do this in early April. Date to be confirmed but either the first or second weekend.

Here's some more detail from my blog. http://informedperformance.com/barry/2010/02/seminar-getting-fitter-faster-and-stronger-for-martial-arts/

id be interested in that, the more decent seminars people run the better for all us coaches of any discipline.

Interested. I've a few things on in April though. What's the expected wallet damage? (even a ball park).

I'm actually in the middle of doing out the schedule but the price will be €80 for the day pre-pay or €100 on the day. 10am until we lose our voices in the evening :).

we're looking at March 27th right now.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

Just giving those interested a quick update on this. We've decided on a format and pricing but we are waiting on some schedules from the teams we coach to make sure we've no conflicts before setting a date in stone.

Keep an eye here or on either http://forum.informedperformance.com or www.informedperformance.com for further details. Ideally I'll post it up here but I am aware of some of the rules regarding advertising so I'll wait until I have something more solid before posting again.

I could contact some of the clubs here in UCC and some other local clubs if you'd be interested in doing a seminar in Cork.

I think its a great idea, and it would be good to hear different views on other peoples weight training for MA, different programms that people follow and what results they got/ get, the using weights to rehab etc etc.

I hope you fill it and its succesfull but you wont get me there at that price, i think thats higher than what would be charged in a one on one session in a lot of places.

    Good luck with it

You're of course entitled to your opinion on the price but I think you're underestimating the level of instruction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

Any more details on what the format is going to be, or am I going to have to learn to be patient?

Finger McGee, do you think youre a bit funny or something?

How much do you clean and jerk, what is your vertical jump? when was the last time you actually spoke to a girl?

I love it when people register just to criticise. You just know they have a username on here already but lack the stones.
Any more details on what the format is going to be, or am I going to have to learn to be patient?
Thanks for the genuine question :)

No we have a format and if you're happy enough to recieve it by email (it's in pdf so can't put it here) send one to me at barry@informedperformance.com and I'll send it back to you. Again, sorry for the delay in getting the detail out but this has been our busy period (GAA pre-season) which is only starting to calm down now.

its more a reflection of my financial situation that I wouldnt pay it, i would be interested and think its a good idea but i couldnt justify spending that amount, thats just me, hopefully for your sake there are enough people that will attend and if the work is done once it might make it cheaper the second time, as i said good luck with it.

There'll also be a student rate of €65 if that interests you. Either way thanks for the feedback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

    To the naysayers:
When its this expensive it just has to be good! ;)

I love it when people register just to criticise. You just know they have a username on here already but lack the stones.

I would have thought that too. This is the only forum where I get that kind of craic going on and I have the tools to check. I have yet to come across someone actually doing that (registering a 2nd account just to take a swipe).

edit: 80's a bit beyond my price range too Barry. Just giving you a bit of feedback. I'd probably go if it was 50. I appreciate that it's a fine line trying to get demand v's cost right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,621 ✭✭✭yomchi

I can understand people enquiring about the price alright but for me this is an investment. My interest in this is different to somebody who would like to go because they have a personal interest in it or from a hobby point of view.

Right now my goals are to increase my output as a coach. I have guys training with me who are now competing on the international stage in sport Taekwon-Do and Kickboxing. If I want them to excel at their level I need to be supplying them with the right info, and to me as a coach this info that Barry is providing is crucial. Crucial for the athletes performance and crucial for me as a coach. Of course I do have a personal interest in this kind of training as well so it's win win.

I like to avail of these opportunities so it's on my to do list!

    That's just my angle.

    Just to follow on from what Yomchi posted;

    The gym

I posted this in the fitness forum. Barry's probably got the biggest selection of serious weight training equipment than any gym I've ever trained in, I've no idea the level of expertise is, but I'm confident that anyone seriously into their weight training would not find Barry's facilities lacking.

The price, I've no opinion as I'm spoilt for professional advice free :P

But from memory Barry has offered more than one freebie visit to his gym since opening (apologises if I have that wrong) so deserve's some support & less of the nay sayers.

Just Re: Presenters. There's me and Will. I won't give my repututation as I might be accused of being arrogant :) but here's Will's:

    From www.informedperformance.com

Will started his coaching career while still competing at an international level (guess the sport and get a prize) and has worked as a strength and conditioning coach for more than 18 years.

During this time he has worked with and for various sporting organisations and a diverse range of athletes in numerous countries from club level up to and including Olympic and World Championship competitors.

In recent years, since being based in Ireland, he has had the good fortune to work with many teams and hundreds of athletes in a wide range of sports. Will aided Olympians Darren Sutherland, David Gillick and Derval O’Rourke in their ascent. He has worked with St Mary’s College Rugby in the AIL, DCU Saints in the National Basketball League, and 3 Rock Rovers in the National Hockey League. And he worked as the strength and conditioning coordinator for GAA teams Na Fianna, St Jude’s and St Bridgid’s and assisted all three teams in making the finals of the Dublin Football Championship.

As Director of Strength and Conditioning at Informed Performance, Will continues working with many athletes in a wide variety of sports, both as teams and at the individual level. Recently, Will has taken interest in the growing sport of MMA as both a strength and conditioning coach and also as a tough competitor.

    Hi all,

We have set the date for Saturday April 3rd at 10am.

The advance payment price will be: €80 for the day, or €65 if you show a valid student card.
The cost for payment on the day will be €100.

Hours will be from 10am to 5pm. If anyone wants a copy of the pdf outline they can mail me barry@informedperformance.com. We are probably going to limit the spaces and we've had quite a bit of interest so far so please register your interest asap.

I thought the prices looked a bit steep but didn't realise it was a whole day seminar rather than an hour or two.

Arghhh...he mentioned this to me at some stage...it was either cross country or rowing...I'm gonna take rowing as my final answer...what do I win?

I might hobble out to this if I can Barry. Lend my support. I think Will is one of the most on the ball strength coachs I have come across in recent times and I agree with what he preaches for the most part. Certainly more than most of the cowboys out there.

Guys the level of conditioning in MMA and other martial arts is shocking in this country so it should be an excellent investment for any coach or competitor.

Just out of interest Baz, whats the qualification you (or your partners) have? Im wondering in what direction the training will be heading, if you know what I mean.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

Not really? Direction? My list of qualifications is on my blog. I'm not entirely sure of what Will's degree was called, human physiology or something but I think the list of clients he and IP have had and their results is a better indication than the letters after our names.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭HammerHeadGym

I can't seem to find any qualifications on the site Barry. Where should I be looking? Anyway, I'm wondering what the course will cover. For example, if it was a day of Olympic lifts I'd go down, but if it was a day of body weight calisthenics, I would not.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

    http://informedperformance.com/barry/about/ for me
    http://informedperformance.com/plogs/will/ for Will

We don't have lists of qualifications on the site in the traditional sense of the word, but if you'd like we could send you a list of some of the Olympic, World and National level athletes Will has trained? I'm in the hapenny place beside Will's record but my specialisation on the seminar is the combination of the two worlds- Combat Sports and S&C.

There are more than enough Oly lifting courses run by the IAWLA, this isn't an Oly lifting seminar. I have a pdf of the format of the day. Mail me and I'll reply with it.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

Ah okay, just figured out that you can attach pdf files to these posts!!!:o

    Full seminar brief attached.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,621 ✭✭✭yomchi

Barry, I'm not a big lifter, will this matter for some of the sections of the course?

Also, what colour will my cert be? My favourite colour is blue if that's any use to you? :o

There is no fundamental requirement to understand how to lift weights for this. The whole concept is based around who ever comes knowing absolutely nothing and then working from there. We'll have plenty of time to give over to individuals who want to know more of the basics on the day, and also plenty of time for those who want to go more in depth.

We don't do certs but I'll make you a special one out of crayon :)

Here's some examples of some of the conditioning sessions we do in the gym. There's plenty of them available on the IP youtube page here and also Will's page here and my page here. Feel free to browse around them and ask questions. We also host a forum and I've opened a topic specifically to discuss the content, format and any other queries about the seminar. It's right here.

Here's an example of an intense conditioning workout from just this morning... there's a bit of... eh... humour in the middle too. I was very tired in my defence, my language is normally much cleaner than that.

Some high conditioning, closer to a fight

    Some more mixed conditioning

As for qualifications...I've a current Irish driving license and a Thai Cooking Cert from the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok....although I think it's out of date :)

Well unless I'm missing something, we're running a strength and conditioning seminar for martial arts, and the strongman seminar is, well, eh, a strongman seminar. I wish Kieran the very best with his seminar and I hope it goes well, but even someone with a modicum of knowledge about training would know that they are chalk and cheese.

Still, while we're on the subject of random things that are cheaper than other things, there's a hold em poker course going on in a hotel near me and I think it's €50 so if anyone wants to pop along to that it's also cheaper than our seminar. Also there's some power tools available from Aldi this week and they're cheaper than our seminar also.

Im pretty sure thats completely different.....Strongman training is not going to condition you to go rounds with some fella trying to kick the head off you....Im not saying its useless for MA but its not what Barry is aiming at here i think!

Considering i know people who charge 60 an hour to learn OY lifts the price of this is a steal!!!

Folks we need no defending, our record and reputation speaks for itself and I shouldn't have reacted to the post last night the way I did. At this stage I should be well used to people trying to knock us when we try to put on something. It's the Irish pastime!
