My 99 Focus is dead, timing belt.
So, I'm thinking of availing of the scrappage scheme (although I'm not really a new car kinda guy).

What's the general opinion of Renault Megane Estate (Grande)?
    http://www.renault.ie/cars/grandmegane/prices.html

I've heard some not so positive things about Renaults.
And also there's the Bill Cullen factor! :)
    Thanks in advance.

    .

It's ok, he does'nt randomly come visit you at home after you buy or anything.:)

I was looking at the hatch a few months back with my cousin. We both really liked it and it was nice to drive. He'd have bought only he's a tight git.:) One of the lads on here has ordered one, I'm sur ehe could give you some input, I'm blanking on who it is though :o

To be honest, for the extra E480 the five year warranty should sort any problems the car might throw up. they're great value and you don't see many of them about either

We have the old model and would go for the new one in a heartbeat. It looks like Renault have sorted out all the weak areas of the previous generation. It's spacious, well equipped, feels very solid, has one of the best diesel engines, has a good warranty and at that price is a bargain.

    I think it was "Jip".

A family member of mine has had a Megane III hatchback for around a year. Well built car and no problems with it, not that I'd expect any. I dislike the digital speedo though.

I find it amazing that a Megane estate diesel can now be gotten for around 15 grand (with scrappage) To put it into perspective, in 1995 a Renault 19 1.4 petrol saloon would have cost around 12k punts/15k euros in a straight deal. The Megane diesel is superior in every way, significant inflation has occured in the economy since 95, yet it's about the same price.

I think the OP should get one :)

Why buy new? if you've got cash there is serious value in the second hand market at the moment.

You may need to re-think your take on the economics of it to include depreciation etc, but there is serious value out there.

Think total cost of ownership. Do a list of all costs, including depreciation.

As an example, it could work out cheaper to buy and run an older three Litre Merc with all the trimmings, leather etc. for three years rather than a 10 plate 1.4 rattle box.

Once again on boards advice is sought on a new car and someone advises a an old car, in this case a German money pit with a huge engine....give the OP some credit.

    What a load of rubbish!

He's buying a particular new car, not that heap you mentioned.

Also where's your suggestion to get rid of his 99 Focus? wont be taken as a trade in on a 3.0l Merc.

Also in 3 years, who in their right mind would buy a 6 year old 3.0l Merc.

This has to have been the worst advice ever. Seriously!!!!!!

OP I'd go for that offer, and truthfully I am seriously considering it myself. Wont go for a test drive as I know I'd commit to buy!

Also if your keeping the car for 5 years with the additional 5 year warranty, this is serious value & peace of mind. Nothing on the market even comes close.
Welll maybe Kia but if you listen carefully you'll hear a particular Merc Fan boy keel over! HA!

That looks pretty good value for the Megane Estate. With the added peace of mind of the additional warranty, the only thing that would concern me would be dealer coverage, but if there is one local to you OP then it could be a good purchase.

The other car I'd consider in that size is the Kia C'eed SW. 7 year warranty as standard but not sure if it would come in as cheap as the Renault, or whether there is a dealer near you.

My parents have one on order. They got it cos the 5 door Megane looks a bit pedestrian (compared to the Coupe).
They said the 1.5 Diesel was lovely to drive but they recommend the parking sensors as the back window is tiny.

Thanks all for the advice, I'm gonna test drive one tomorrow morn.
I'll let you know how it goes :-)

It's a great deal. It looks a great car and drives well.
My only issue are seats, they seem small (narrow and length). I'm 6'4" so I need a bit of room for these long legs!

Also, when my flattened the boot, the rear car seats seemed really thing and flimsy.
If I do purchase, I plan on keeping it for 10 years+.
Am I just being too picky?
    thanks again.

10 years is a long time given how complex/fragile cars are now. But if you get the 5 year warranty you will be covered far better than most. But if the seats don't suit your build then ten years is a long time to be uncomfortable! Maybe arrange a 24 hour test drive to be sure.

Would a Scenic be any good?

Carefull now, you know as well as most theres an anti MPV manly image to uphold on this forum. :)

Theres should probably be a private forum where the men can ask about them in peace without fear of ridicule.

I think at 6'4 your probably a bit tall to get truly comfortable in a Megane, they have reasonable room but you'll find it a tight fit. Octavia Estate has better front leg room (at expense of rear passengers) or failing that you'd need to look at the class above - Mondeo etc, though that would be a massive step up in money

Good car but the 86 bhp has to work hard as they are'nt the lightest car, the 106bhp feels like a car with more than adequate power but again the cost is a substantially higher

Not a massive step up, as colm says there the Scenic which has as much room as anyone who isnt in the guinness book of records or on the larger side of NBA players will need. Starts just shy of €22k

I purchased the Megane 1.5dci 86bhp in Hatchback - drives great and has decent enough acceleration for normal overtakes etc.

Excellent fuel economy in the 86bhp for normal driving although on high speed motorway driving that falls away due to lack of BHP!

The Dynamique comes with bluetooth, mp3, cruise control all as standard and with the 5 year warranty (at a small cost), much better option than same money on any second hand car.

Also, don't forget road tax on 1.5 (85bhp) is €104 per year or €156 for the 106bhp if you want a little bit more poke.

If you do look at the car, be aware of space in back - no legroom!! Front is comfortable and decent sized boot though.

Having given the car some good mileage in few weeks I have owned it, I remain very happy.

Is the wheelbase of the Megane Estate not longer than that of the Hatch therefore giving it additional rear legroom? It was certainly the case with the last generation where the Hatch, Coupe and Scenic had a shorter wheelbase than the Saloon, Estate and Grand Scenic.

thebiglad, how long were you waiting for it ? I know someone around here said they've seen a load of them on the road, I've only seen 3 or 4 and I've been looking out for them !

The wheelbase on the estate is 2,701 and 2,641 on the hatch.

I just put a deposit down on the 106bhp tomtom edition on Monday. Went for the 5 year warranty for peace of mind too and the metallic. Was very tempted by the white, the on in the showroom was white and looked fantastic. But I had this vision of being in the carwash 3 days a week. I shopped around and ended up buying in Joe Norris in Kentstown. They gave me the best price. Airside Renault were coming in about 500 dearer. When I mentioned the price they said they would price match but later phoned and dropped by 250. Joe Norris then matched and reduced the extended warranty and promised a full tank of diesel.

Bottom line, got a 2011 106bhp tomtom edition renault grand megane with metallic and 5 year warranty for 19,100 on the scrappage.

That would be a petrol so. Renault dont have a 1.4 diesel. Theres a 1.5 diesel. The Diesel in that age of Megane was available in 86 and 100bhp, youd definately be wanting the 100. The 1.4 petrol is 100bhp too.

SaabEd is a good man to talk to on here. My mother bought a Grand Megane TomTom off him a few months back on scrappage. He was easily the cheaper than the Dublin Renault Dealers ( Liffey Valley Renault got to within €1000 of his price for one they had sitting on stock in a colour she didnt really want)

    Many thanks for the reply,
I checked reg on cartel and it's 1.5 diesel.. Thanks..
It's 04 with 148,000 miles on it, is that high for diesel, does it affect performance of car? Should I be looking for lower mileage?? Or is it ok at 148,000..

Any important questions I can pose to garage when I ring tomorrow?
