Looks like Miss Maura got a bit of a telling off from the judge today.

Looks like the judge told her there was only one force of law and order in this country..The Gárdaí.

No harm in my opinion, this rent a crowd lot have cost the taxpayer millions.

The only people who are protesting are the hard left ranging from Sinn Fein, People before Profit, Socialist Party, Joe higgins and other har core lefties who are completely out of touch with mainstream opinion in Mayo, also around that area it must be the only part of Ireland that is booming right now with over 1,000 people in employment because of the Shell scheme.

she won't care seeing as she can't listen to reason. It's like all fundamentalists - once they believe their beliefs are the only truth, they just aren't interested in anything else.

Have not really decided weather or not I support the shell to see or not tbh but I dont see the problem with the women. In fact i often wonder if there should be more like her.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maura_Harrington

i though this thread was politics so far its really just a rant about the women.

What is the problem with the women.

What aspects of her campagn do you dont you agree with.

As for removing the protesters. This is something that will be next on the agenda. It already happens in the uk and will happen here.

She is costing the state a fortune!!

She was on sick leave from the school to go protest but when that came out in the papers she retires onto her state pension..
They employ extra security because of her and the rest of the protesters.... Most of them were Gardai at the state cost..
the countless arrests and court days... More money spent..

Instead of paying her fine she took the Jail term... How much did that cost the tax payer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

She says she is not paying the fine,so looking to become a martyr.

Beats me shyteways how these people can pull a state pension and yet cost John Q taxpayer millions due to the disruption and Garda expense.

Can these people not be sued and the bought in punters sued if they break the law.

Can't understand the pussyfooting going on down there.

I you or I behaved like that in our area we would be locked up sharpish.

    again I ask you folks

What or why is she protesting

Is it the women you have a problem with.

    Is the protest supported

    What of this is politics....

1,000 jobs? Most of them temporary. There is billions of Euro worth of gas in our marine territory. We as good as handed it over to Shell. They will pay max 25% tax and we will buy back our own gas from them at whatever rate they say.

Norway...the state earns 50% of whatever profits come from it, plus the oil companies build infrastructure, hospitals and free gas of course.
We have a potholed road leading down to a construction site where local guys think its great to have a bit of work for a while.

I would imagine Shell love this whole saga, most gas extraction has been capped in the Arabian Gulf as an investment as its not getting any cheaper. Imagine what it will be worth in 10 years? Imagine if more people like Maura Harrington had protested when the time was right and we never handed all this over?

So with our billions and billions of euros of gas, we sit in a deep recession and those who protest against this get portrayed as inane troublemakers.
    We deserve the recession.

1000 jobs pouring a few million into the local economy? It an insult compared to what might have been. And it will probably not even balance out the long term jobs lost to tourism as a result of the ecological wasteland that part of mayo will become.

Take it up with Ray Burke and FF, NOT Shell, they're only too happy they came across some gombeen clown. They don't owe Ireland anything. The original 5 protestors may have had a general grievance but the current clowns are confrontation junkies.
Ireland doesn't deserve the recession because of shell, they derseve the politicians like Ray Burke and the consequences of constantly voting in people just like him nation wide. If the rant above is all you have to offer you won't be contributing to exiting the recession.

Love her or hate her, I think having the freedom to protest (and indeed be punished for your protesting) is a fundamental right of society.

I don't think the cost to the state is really the issue. You wouldn't say that Nelson Mandela should have just kept quiet instead of costing the SA state 30 years of prison dinners. So it must be that you don't like what she is saying/doing AND she is costing the state money by doing it.

I am anything but a hard leftie but they have rights END OF!

So what if she doesnt want to pay a fine, its her right not to. What would you do, strip her off her private assets until she stops moaning like the Third Reich?

This whole thing is a bit of a mess, BUT the very fact that Ray Burke was the person to sign over this gas to Shell makes me very un easy about the whole thing. I think we are signing over future resources for a penny and if people want to protest against that fair enough. However some of their antics has to be questioned.

You can have a peace full protest... It doesn't have to cost the state millions..

You can have your protest but do it legally and Im sure you will win more of the general public but instead they broke the law many times and all we thought was what a load of hippy's.. They won no support by breaking the law and getting themselves in prison..

    1. I agree, the woman has a right to protest.

I think it's always worthwhile in these situtations to look at what the population in the area believe.

It has been known for a long time that the people on this peninsula are delighted to see these employment opportunities, many of them working there.
I know and have worked with people from the area who are mildly embarassed and always at pain to point out that these protestors in no way represent the majority.

As for enviromental impacts, there are very few constructions of this scale that have beautified as much as this one, you literally cannot see it for the trees.

And if you saw the documentary on TV3 tonight, the landowners beside the terminal said that while they could see it every day, they had no problem with the development, but the self-righteous morally outraged people who could never see it unless they went out of their way opposed it.

Some people just like conflict, reason will never win them round. These are the same people you would see on the news clips kicking a Garda, then as soon as they would be touched themselves would scream assault.

I'm from the general area and of course I believe in maintaining its beauty. But look at the map of North Mayo, it's a speck on the coastline and a lifeline for the true natives

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

    Thats the whole point.

It would appear that the locals see the development by and large as a good thing for the area.

The fundamentalists would appear to have bussed in the rent-a -mob lot much the same as the |Glen of the Downs where while the opposition was not as violent, it was sustained.

If the law is broken people should be arrested and charged.

If I am to read between the lines of the judge, it was like the frikken Wild West down there.

As Mr Crown so pithily put it" Maybe a spell in the chokey might soften their cough"

The flynns get back into power not because of the people that vote for them but because of the people that cannot be bothered to vote. In fact most of the problems in this country can be attributed to those who do not vote. If you were ray burke who would you look after... Correct! Those who look after you. I can name large areas of the country with only 10% turnout and less in the elections

As for the electrote down in mayo the way i figure it is simple. How many people will this pipe like effect crossing there land.... Not enough to worry about, in an electrol sense.

I am anything but a hard leftie but they have rights END OF!

    Hmmmm ?

Let's look at that position in a little more detail shall we ?

Let's take Motorways - a subject always close to the heart of your average crustie.

Now me and my 50 or so crustie friends think the speed limits on Motorways is too high.

A danger to life and limb we say and quote the relevant statistics.

So we take ourselves orf to the M50 and hold a sit down protest on the South bound carriagway at 9am...completely block the road so we do .....and inconvenience thousands of commuters who do not realise that we are only doing this to protect them.

We get hauled away...but we KNOW we are RIGHT and come back the next day and repeat the exercise.

One old snaggle headed biddy - delighted that at least some excitement and notoriety has come into her life - clocks a Garda Inspector - and is an instant celebrity - on Radio and TV - people recognise her, canvass her opinion..suddenly she is "someone" the darling of the tree hugging / sandal wearing /muesli chomping "alternatives.

This is much better than a boring old teaching job so she packs it in..supported by a generous state pension and gathers additional followers mostly supported by generous state social welfare.

They continue to clog up the M50 - and continue to cause the state millions in unnecessary expenditure and lost opportunity cost.

But she has a right to protest - we agreed that......didn't we.??

The reason peole voted for, and still vote for, the Flynns is because they make fantastic TD's.
We all know of corruption etc etc but when it comes down to it, politics is local. And it is as simple as getting your road tarred, or money for a clubhouse for your soccer/gaa pitch and this is what gets votes.
P Flynn built ring roads all around Castlebar which brought in industrial estates and jobs. Beverly would probably get you a clubhouse built for a game of keepy uppy! This is while they'll get votes time and time again, it's a simple case of you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

And there's nobody else who can do it as well as they can

for a bit of perspective here see shell to sea thread to find out what happened to protestors in Nigeria when they took on Shell. Judges frequently make these throwaway comments. Not condoning outright the actions of protestors but given what happened in Nigeria where Shell reneged on its environmental responsibilities dont think we should be so quick to denounce their actions.

No correction this whole debacle has cost the taxpayer millions and once the gas is brought ashore it will still cost the taxpayers millions in lost tax revenue and having to pay market rates for our own gas.
There are very few in this country that are going to make money out of this unless of course they happen to be Shell shareholders or possibly ex ministers.

This whole thing has been badly planned, badly handled and will only ever cost us money.
It is yet another example of how not to go about doing infrastructure projects.
Fcukin cow is on a state pension as well ...wasn't she a teacher ?

A little spell in the chokey might soften her cough.....

Yeah lets throw in jail anyone that has the balls to stand up or lie down for something they believe in.
I thought we got rid of the Brits to try and put an end to that style of rule.

PS I am not SF or anything close.
Also not a green or any monster raving Amhran Nua group.

You might not agree with her or her and her collegues methods, but by Christ they have worked in forcing changes to what was seen by many experts as an unsafe pipeline by one of the worlds biggest oil companies.

We have people on these forums always complaining that Irish people haven't done enough to get ff out of government, done enough to stop NAMA, done enough for this that and the other.
Well maybe if we had more maura harringtons we might not have a f***ing NAMA.

Of course I am waiting for refrain that we would never get anywhere if we did have more people like her, which I admit does have a fair amount of truth to it.

I always believe that a lot of the pro development posters on these discussions are nimbys, because they are always pro development until it arrives in their backyard.
It is always easy to say one has no problem with this pipeline or refinery, as indeed is said by a lot of people who live only a few miles away from it, seen as they are not the ones sleeping beside the bloomin thing for the next 20 years.
there was a program on tv3 about it last night with the sunday world journo paul williams presenting it.

I would question Paul Williams objectivity in this regarding Gardaí involvment since AFAIK he sometimes is under Garda protection.

I am not allowed discuss …

The facts are , facts, Joey, that the locals want the development to go ahead but bussed in people who have no connection with the place are causing trouble.

No business has ethics. Ray Burke and Ben Dunne should have thought you that. Yes I pay tax. I am more concerned at how my tax is wasted buying expensive computer systems for the garda that does not work.

I think my tax take could be greatly reduced if shell was forced to adopt the Norway model of paying out royalities.

This is what irks me about this. Its like these people are protesting for the fun of it. Just like those in the Glen of the Downs. And I think what was brought up in last few days on radio was that the road widening actually didnt solve the problems down that way.

    Eh ?

The original problem was a narrow road which caused a daily massive bottleneck,

The current road is a modern dual carriagway which has reduced journey times by an average of 27 %.

What problems not solved - F*%$£in mystery of the Turin Shroud ??

Thats a great little story for your little brain but if it were so true why hasnt it happened? By all means go and do it but you will be the only one there pal. Comparing the above with the shell to sea is raving lunatic stuff and totally avoids the questions at hand.
