Compaq Laptop high-freq buzz

When I am charging my laptop AND it is running at a higher frequency, there is a very high pitch buzz from the laptop, really only noticeable in a quiet room, if I turn the freq down (I use speedswitch xp) or disconnect the mains (while leaving laptop running at high speed, the buzzing disappears. I've checked and its not coming from the charger. Now the laptop is over 3 years old so I am just wondering if this is a sign that the laptop is one foot in the grave or can anything be done?

    cheers,
    daywalker

If its what I think it is, its nothing to worry about. Intel CPU whine is well documented, I think its caused by the CPU entering a particular power state, among other things. And the Southbridge can emit some kind of whine also. Most people can't even hear it.

There are various fixes for it, google will help you out there. But its only something to do if it really bothers you. It wont do any harm to your laptop.

does it matter if it is an AMD Mobile Semperon? Do they suffer from similar symptoms?

Might be something different then. The Intel CPUs were well known for the high pitched whine in some power states, but I dont know much about AMD. Google AMD CPU whine and see what turns up.
