Window Acoustics

    Hello all,

I'm in the process of converting my bedroom acoustically. Have built my own corner bass traps; 4ftx2ftx4inch, working on side and back wall panels, ditching my wooden wardrobes for fabric wardrobes etc..

Problem is; there's a huge window in my room on the sidewall, I reckon about 5.5ft wide by 4.5ft tall. Too big for a decent insert so I'm thinking a pair of good blackout curtains or quiet curtains. I think most of the furniture stores do some sort of blackout curtains but do any of you have any experience on the matter and what price would I be talking for the above dimensions?

    Thanks!

far as i know windows act like large bass traps , so id put it either behind the desk , or on the back wall in your design .

off to one side of the mix area , may affect your bass on one side of the room .

Yeah i think your right with the bass but mid/higher frequencies can get reflected can they not? Plus the isolation from outside is a big factor in my hunt for a solution. Wouldn't work setting up in front of the window because the length of the room is in the adjacent walls, and the window side would be too narrow.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've tried those blackout curtains but they do fk all in the way of isolation. Anyone ever use the sealing tapes or are they much addition?

Sealing tape may help, air gaps will allow sound to transmit. The problem is though that the window moves and lets sound transmit through it.

How about a second window? You could get out your measuring tape and head down to the salvage yard.

Either way it's going to involve major work. So I'd start thinking about that insert again. It's not that big!

Dunno where I got those above dimensions, must have had something else in my head at the time, the window is 8ft wide by 5ft!! There's a 5inch gap between existing curtain and window (double glaze) so maybe another inner curtain and lining would help along with the seal. Don't think I can afford a second window, probably be talking 400+ for something that size.
