    Hi there

Driving on the M50 last week and I went to open the front drivers window a little. there was a grinding noise and the window came all the way down, Eventually when I got home I was able to get it to close up, Now there is no action only same grinding noise. I can only assume its bad and probably the electric window motor. I drive a VW passat. Any thoughts or ideas? How much wil a replacement cost? Can I get a part from a wreckers yard?

I'd safely say it's some gears worn out, whether they are attached to a motor meaning that must be replaced.... dunno.
I'd recon you could get the whole assembly in a breakers. www.passatworld.com has plenty of info about diy stuff, I think it's in the information base.

The cable in your window regulator is gone.

I wouldn't waste my time on second hand parts for this as it is a very common problem on passats, presuming it's the '97-'04 model.

thanks for the quick responses lads, yes it is this model, I am actually thinking of changing car so I just want to get it sorted, if its a case that there is not a lot of a price difference then the newer one sounds a better option, I presume it will be expensive though as all VW parts are

I think spurious regulators are available from motor factors so it mightn't be too bad.

So if I was to search a car breakers for this part, aM I loking for specifically a 1995-200 model one or are they available up to the 04 model? I presume that it makes my search a little easier

    Has come up before.
    Here
Funnily enough I think my passenger door regulator is going now.
Easy enought to fix, just make sure you have all the tools before you start.

Ya its the cable as others said. Mine went too, cost E80 to buy a replacement (had to get entire unit, not just cable) and whatever labour your garage man charges on top of that. I used my local grease monkey as opposed to a main dealer.

Its a pain in the arse to replace apparently. There are spot welds and other fiddly things to get around.

Depends on what is gone clips are known to go. If you tackle it yourself might be handy to get a tube of silcone grease to lubricate all the window parts while the door card is off.

Micks Garage as far as im aware does patent parts. Might want to check what they have and who manufactures it. You can get Wahr window regulators off eurocar parts for £55.

Follow this guide, you can't go wrong: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107 You'll be changing the entire regulator so there'll be no need to go near the clips themselves.
