    Hey,

a group of friends and I are looking to drive route 66 this summer. There are 4 of us looking to do it and 3 of us would be driving, I will be 23 but all the others will be under 21. We are looking to see our options in terms of cars. The 3 others will be in Canada for the first few months of summer and were thinking they could buy a car there and then drive it down to chicago, meet me there, then drive route 66 and back up to Canada to sell it on. I am having some trouble finding details of getting a 1 month insurance policey and the details involved in registration and insurance for us.

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

The first thing to check would be if you can insure a car that you own in Canada without a Canadian driving licence. The insurance could also be quite expensive as they may not take your driving history into account.

Do you think it would be worth talking to the canadian embessy about any of this or is that a waste of time?

It's not really an embassy thing, each state in Canada (and in the US) has there own rules about driving licences and vehicle registration.

    Here are some links:
    Driving licences in Canada
    Vehicle Registration in Canada

From a quick glance through the second one you need an Alberta licence to register a vehicle in Alberta but it seems you only need ID in British Columbia for example (don't take this as gospel, I just skimmed the articles)

THanks, hadnt managed to find those sites. BC seems to be the best place to buy alright. Ill have to do a bit more digging. Has any one any experience with anything like this?

A couple of my friends did. They bought a car and insured it with very little hassle. Again, Canada seems the way to go as regards buying and insuring. The only thing to remember is the US and Canada are different countries. As a result be sure to be insured to drive internationally.

Iron claw, do you know where bouts they bought the car (B.C. vs ONtario etc.) as the rules seems to differ from place to place and as was said earlier BC seems to be the best, my friends however will be in Toronto.

I'll see can I find out but I have a feeling it was British Columbia and close to the border.
