Do silencers actually muffle the sound or are they just for looks?

Mainly for looks, but some work to a very limited extent. The G&G suppressor (silencer) for the G&G UMP does actually dull the sound it makes, while you don't really notice as the gearbox is right at your face, the person on the other end some metres away can tell the difference.

Silencers on GBBs, I find make no difference.

Yup, most of the sound from a GBB is the bolt/slide moving back and forth., you will notice a distinct change in the sound of an AEG though, it takes the snap out of the shots and sounds more like a dull thud instead. from a few meters away you'll still hear the low thud but it gets very hard to tell where it came from .

i find the silencer on a p90 makes a big difference to the sound of it, i didn't notice much difference on other guns though

You can also get stuff like the Element Sound Hog, which changes the timbre of the shot to be louder.

mainly for looks plus is awsome to stick a extended barrell through.
but some of them can muffle the sound and alter the sound slightly, but some of the hollow/empty silencers can make it louder :D

Some TM silencers actually have baffles inside to reduce the noise much like the way they work in an exhaust backbox., the VSR comes with one and it works very well.,

    yeah you want in?

    back on topic...
A silencer is all up to personal choice, where if your into CQBing a building etc. it would be handier to use a shorter gun but if your into the mid range interception a silencer would be handy as you can stick on a extended barrel and hide the the barrel with your silencer. My g36c with a silencer is abit long for me at the moment(looks awsome though ;)) but it isnt half as long as the time i was using a m4 with a silencer... i was CQBing a building and when i was shooting into the windows i actualy had to take the silencer off as it was so rediculously long. personal choice!

Its really just for looks tbh, I had a p90 also and that was the only aeg I found it made a real diff on.

I just like the look of silenced pistols though so all mine have threaded barrels with accompanying silencers. It does do a lot for suppression but what I do find is it changes the tone from an airsofty bang to a more Hollywood thud silencer sound. Not like a real silencer which I find is more like a metallic tapping sound but still cool that there is a noticeable change with and without one for effect.

I used a silencer to cover the extra barrel length for a while, then I discovered that in the cold around New Years it was very loose on the end of the barrel. Chewed up the inside of the silencer with BBs and wasn't getting any down range.
