on JSB thinking of doing a masters

    Hi Everyone,

I'm currently on JSB since being made redundant last june. I have applied for so many jobs its actually funny at this stage. I'm not used to being unemployed. I worked all through college ( though I did recieve grant also). I now have a Hons Degree.

Since the job scene is so bleak I've been thinking of doing a masters, the particular masters I want to do is fulltime. The Masters begin in September, at which time I do think my stamps will run out and I'll be on JSA (hopefully I'll have a job before then, but god only knows).

My question is can I continue to recieve anything while doing my masters? If I'm not lucky enough to have a job at this time I mean, ?
Or will I just have to completely come off any benefit/allowance?
If I were lucky enough to get a grant for a Masters, can I recieve any benefit along with this?

    Thanks for reading!

Actually its not an outright 'no'. I was doing a taught one year masters last year (so modules then thesis for summer). I finished the modules but due to medical reasons I had to defer my thesis, so I took it back up in September (and was declared medically fit first). I was eligible for JSB because it was a thesis by submission only, meaning because I did not have modules to do, I was available to work, having explained any thesis work would be in my own time. I would imagine this would apply to you if you were doing a non-taught (or 'research' as I think they call it) masters. If its a full on taught masters though, then no.

I feel your pain, have an Hons BSc, on the verge of completing a MSc and can only get one day a week so still on casual JSB!

edit: not a clue re additional benefits impact
