I have a wedding gown and long lace and net mantilla from my wedding in 1968. I would like to use the fabric from either for my daughter's wedding. None of the fabric would work as handkerchieves because all of the fabric is sheer. any ideas?

Depends on the style of your daughters gown however I took pictures of a wedding last year where the girl had a hip belt on the dress, she had the dress made and the belt was help together with her nans brooch but it was the first time I saw a blt on a dress and it was fabulous.

Its the first wedding on this page, the girl with the dark hair, you cant see a lot of detail in these pictures but you'll get the idea.

That material would be beautiful as a trim edge on a veil or a trim edge along the top of the dress if it suited the dress material. Perhaps ask in the store where your daughter will purchase her dress as a seamstress would likely have good ideas and know what will work.

Couldnt you make a garter out of it, then it could be something old, something borrowed, attach a new blue ribbon and it can be the new and blue also, all 4 in 1.

Could you have a handbag made with it? I know you said it is sheer but the bag could be made from satin with the lace over it! Or you could have shoes covered with it too.

Could you use some to make the cushion for the rings , it would be a lovely keepsake.

I have my Fathers born 1931 christening robe , my own were all christened in it and I relined it with material from my wedding dress

here is the problem, this bride wants the ring barers to carry small twig wreaths with bird's nests as the center.

    don't ask

Well what exactly had you in mind? Its all very well to say you would like to use it but as you said your daughter has everything covered so maybe its just not meant to be? Also does you daughter know you want to do this? I certainly wouldnt be approaching the shop where she's getting her dress - I would go effing mental if anyone touched my dress - mother or not :D

Also would you not like to just leave your dress as it is?

that is why I asked here where I thought someone would be more creative than I.

I have no intention of touching her dress or head piece. I merely thought, for the sake of family and sentimentality, that it would be a nice touch to add a piece of my lace cathedral length mantilla to some part of the wedding.

I have added a 1 inch circles of the lace to every bow for shower gifts for years and the brides have always been so touched that they added it to their bouquets. They thought it was a beautiful good luck piece.

I'm not the only one who feels sentimental about tradition.

My dress is 41 yrs old, who makes it that long any more? I think it has good luck attached to it.

Like tuom said, I wanted it to be a family keepsake.

But, thanks ever so much for your eloquent response.

Depending on her bouquet, what about using a long narrow piece of the lace as a ribbon around the stem of the bouquet. This might work, esp if she is having a hand-ties or 'bunch' bouquet. It would be included but not obviously 'added' on. Speak to your daugher and her florist perhaps?

Could you incorporate it into the bouquet maybe? I know brides can get the bouquet dried and framed and the lace could be then framed with it?
(oops didn't notice Cinkcikchik already suggested it- but I'll add the having the bouquet framed with the lace too!

Aww this is so nice. I love the idea of incorporating your dress into your daughter's wedding.

But are you sure your daughter wants this?

Perhaps hold onto the dress and get a good dressmaker to make christening robes out of it, this would start a new tradition in your family, take before and after pictures, this would make it a really good way of keeping it in the family , check out the net for patterns of christening robes, you would be sure to have enough material . Good Luck.

If you want it to be a family keepsake then I would keep it in its orginal condition for future grandchildren maybe?
And I do know about sentimentality thanks - I have my mothers dress also about 41 years old but I wouldnt dream of cutting it up.
