VNC & 3 Mobile Broadband

    Hello all,

was wondering if someone could perhaps send a few pearls of wisdom my way. I've recently has some success with vnc at home and now the grandparents are looking for me to install it on their computer so I can remotely fix any problems on it, the problem is that they are using 3 mobile broadband and it seems to be blocking every port going (or at least all the ones I've tested using the portqueryui.exe utility). I can verify that the ports I wish to use are accessible over a lan, just not over the mobile broadband. Has anyone had success in this area before and, if so, what ports are you using?

    Thanks in advance,
    Antar.

Use LogMeIn.com free version, its based on an online control panel which will allow you to control a pc remotely.

Thanks for the suggestion spiderpig2k7 but there's just something about logmein that I don't like. Thankfully I've managed to sort out VNC though, just did the obvious thing and used port 80 :o

Logmein would be a far better solution than VNC for remote control. Using VNC, you've got pretty much no security in place. You're leaving your grandparent's computer vulnerable to outside attack.

There's no valid reason not to use logmein, especially when it's available free of charge, and it's secure.

Why is it open to attack? There's a massive password required to log in via the viewer or is it possible to by-pass this?

There's no router in the 3G modems, so no hardware firewall. There's no encryption of the connection between you and them, so it's wide open to abuse. Anyone could run a port sniffer on the network and see VNC waiting to accept incoming connections. Passwords can be cracked.

Maybe it's not likely, and maybe there's nothing there of interest anyway, but it's still unsecured. When there is a perfectly secure and free alternate available, there's no reason not to use that, regardless of whether there's something that you don't like about it, but don't know what that is.
