Newbie Term

Could somebody maybe shed a little light on this term? Is a 'newbie' a total 1st/2nd timer or even a competitor who has taken part in say 5/6 events before they become 'experienced'.

From what i saw at the Phoenix Park on Sunday some very advanced 'newbies' were taking part. For example, i'm sure it takes some competitive practice to leave transition with your cycling shoes attached and to slip on whilst mounted and also sign off on a very competitive time for the distance. On the other hand fair play if it has come through practice and training sessions through the winter

Would be intetested to hear others thoughts on it.

Btw no sour grapes here as i competed which was my 2nd duathlon and was very happy with my time but i'm sure some whilst having a competitive nature would like an equal playing field for an event they enter for.

There is no way those guys in the top 3 of the newbie race were competing in their first race. I'm not too worried about it tho. I was well within my target time and got a top 10 finish too so i was happy with that in my first race.

I think a lot of this is peoples perception of themselves, maybe these guys run or bike, in face run and bike, but have never done one after the other as they would have on Sunday. Rather than run the risk of 'embarassing' themselves in the experience race, they opted for the newbie race.

I originally entered the newbie race as I never did a duathlon before, but as I both run and cycle at different times I decided to run the risk of entering the experienced race and got on much better than expected with a top 15 finish.

I would like to think that people didn't enter the newbie race with the sole intention of trying to win it.

I think the top 10 in the newbie race shold be made enter the experienced race next time out (if they are registered).

A regular over on cycling finished 4th/5th and it was his first race..

Looking at the times they don't look all that special if the given distances were correct.
