New to running - advice?

I live in Dublin 7 quite near the Phoenix Park. I am very eager to start running as really want to improve my fitness and am weeks off smoking and drinking.

Question is are there any clubs who run within the park or in that area as I am a girl and would not feel safe running outside alone.

Also i predict that i will not be able to keep up so does this matter and what should I do when everyone disappears over the horizon and i'm left puffing along. I really know v little about running just people who now love it..

    Any help appreciated.......:)

Donore Harriers are right by the park, at the Chapelizod gate, you should get in touch with them

Or Liffey Valley AC at Islandbridge.

Floopy if you start with the right group then it is unlikely that they'll leave you to struggle by yourself. Most clubs these days look after their beginners and have no expectations or assumptions of present ability. Give either of the above a call, go along and try them out.

    Good luck.

Civil Service AC is based in the Phoenix Park, beside the dog pond and across the road from the Zoo. They have a runner group on a Saturday morning for people who have just started jogging etc. If you google Phoenix Park Runners or Civil Service AC you should be able to get a contact number for the people who organise this. Best of luck with you running Floppy!:)

Hi Floopy, dont know anything about the area, sorry.

But just wanted to say that joining a club as a beginner was great for me. We are organised into groups according to our abilities and nobody is ever left behind! It's brilliant to run with a group and you will really find your fitness level improving faster than you think.

    Best of luck!

+1 on annieee's comments about the benefits of joining a club, it will really bring you on and the camradarie is great for keeping you committed.
It might be no harm though to build up a bit of mileage on your own first, I know I found this useful before I joined a club. Are you doing any mileage at all yet?

Thanks for all the help, I called the Harriers and it sounds great but just a bit hard to get to for me. I reckon the Phoenix Park runners will suit me best as just a short walk from my house. I guess you kust show up on the day?

I have no mileage but do fast walk about 15 miles a week and do aqua aerobics and salsa so am a bit fit. A few people I know adore running so I want to get in on that, lose weight and get fit.

Really lookin forward to it now just gotta get out of the bed early on Saturday! :)
