    Hi folks,

I recently joined a club for the first time, handed in my 3 cards and got a handicap of 20. I know that for every card I hand in that I dont play to my handicap and I'm outside the buffer zone they add .1 to my handicap. However I dont know how it is reduced, is it .1 for every shot better or is it calculated some other way.

    hope u can help

    Full details here http://www.congu.com/template2.asp?pid=51&parent=33&parent2=51

Brief explanation here... Basically you are a category 3 golfer (handicaps of 13 to 20).
For every shot you beat the CSS by in a qualifying competition, your handicap goes down by 0.3

CSS is a relative measure of how difficult the course was playing that day. The course could be a par 72 but the CSS can change based on what tees you played off, what the weather was etc. It's calculated based on results and you don't need to worry how it's calculated, just to know that your handicap is adjusted based on it and that it may change from week to week.
Your handicap only gets adjusted in qualifying competitions. Usually this time of the year the comps are non-qualifying because placing is allowed in the rough etc. These days don't affect your handicap. In the season, in a qualifying competition you handicap can go up or come down or stay put.

Let's assume a par of 72 and a CSS of 72 for easiness sake.
If you take 92-95 shots then your nett score will be 72-75 and your handicap won't change because you are in the buffer zone. Category 3 golfers have a 0 to 3 shot buffer zone.
If you take 96+ shots you'll go up by 0.1
Regardless how bad you are, once you are outside the buffer you just change by 0.1 per round.
If you took 88 shots, then your nett score is 68 which is 4 under the CSS so your handicap would reduce by 4 x 0.3 = 1.2 shots so 1.2 is taken off your exact handicap.

There are some subtleties when you cross into a new category too but you've enough to go on there :)

Oh and stableford points is the same principle. If the CSS is 36 points, your buffer is 33-36 points. Anything worse than 33 and you increase by 0.1 for the round.
Anything better than 36 and you decrease by 0.3 per point so 40 points would be your 4 x 0.3 = 1.2 reduction again off your exact handicap.
